When he played at Stanford and finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1982, few had any doubt that John Elway had the potential to become a star in the NFL. While some great talents never do make it big on a professional level, sixteen years after being drafted in 1983 Elway retired from football with a career that legends are made of. A nine-time Pro Bowler, Elway threw for over 51,000 yards while leading the Broncos to five Super Bowl appearances. Fittingly, in his last two years in the league, Elway led the Denver Broncos to world championships in 1997 and 1998. It was a storybook ending to a storybook career.
We are aware that many avid Elway collectors have waited patiently for an Elway jersey they could feel comfortable including as a cherished part of their collection. Fortunately, the waiting is over. Just as the amazing athlete that wore it, the use and provenance of this incredible white nylon mesh garment with hand-warmer pocket and team repair on the right chest places it among the elite game used football jerseys in the hobby.
Along with a letter of authenticity from the Denver Broncos equipment manager, this jersey was also evaluated by Patrick Scoggin, the Director of Endzone Sports Charities and one of the industries foremost authorities on Broncos memorabilia. Here is a full explanation of this jersey as per Mr. Scoggin's letter (he also style-matched this jersey to one worn by Elway on 11/23/86 against the New York Giants):
The jersey is constructed of a white nylon mesh throughout, the standard utilized by the Broncos from 1972 through 1988. The jersey features 1" hemmed sleeves and a 1" ribbed-knit V-collar. Sleeve striping consists of one ½" orange strip between two ¾" royal blue strips with ¼" of white separation between. The uniform number "7" appears in sans serif font on the front, back and on each sleeve, in a 2-color royal blue over orange screened application.
On the lower left tail of the jersey is the Champion label, with style appropriate to a mid-1980s issue. Care instructions and sizing notation are incorporated within this tag, with the sizing indicated as "L" (Large), consistent with physical measurements of the jersey and both appropriate for the player and/or consistent (+/- one size) with other known exemplars from this time period in the player's career.
Photographic evidence indicates the presence of the red, white and blue Champion "C" logo applied to the left lower sleeve which is consistent with a circa 1985-'86 limited-use issue as worn exclusively by the indicated player for a number of games during this two-year period. While this logo is absent on the examined jersey, evidence of its placement and subsequent removal is apparent on the inside of the sleeve.
On the back of the jersey is the name "E-L-W-A-Y". The lettering is approximately 3" blue tackle twill, affixed to a nameplate of self-material which has been sewn to the back of the jersey.
The jersey shows evidence of game use including soiling, impact marks, a single team repair on the right chest, and evidence of laundering. Sleeves have been custom altered and a hand-warmer pocket consisting of self material with 1 ¼" ribbed-knit edging has been affixed to the lower front torso.
In our opinion, this is an authentic game-used road jersey worn by Denver Broncos Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway during the 1986 season.
If you have been waiting for a phenomenal and legitimate Elway jersey for your collection, we highly recommend you don't miss this one.
The winning bidder will receive both the Broncos equipment manager LOA on Broncos Letterhead as well as the Endzone Sports Charities LOA.
