Tommy Davis 1961 Signed H & B Game Used Bat

In 18 seasons Tommy Davis batted .294 with 153 home runs, 2121 hits, 1052 RBI and 811 runs in 1999 games played. He was named to the NL All-Star team in 1962 and 1963. He was also one of the most proficient pinch-hitters in baseball history with a .320 batting average (63-for-197) – the highest in major league history upon his retirement, breaking the .312 mark of Frenchy Bordagaray. His Dodgers batting average record for right-handed hitters of .346 was broken in 1997 by Mike Piazza. In 1962 he finished third in the MVP voting after leading the major leagues in batting average, hits and runs batted in. His 153 RBI in that season broke Roy Campanella's team record of 142 in 1953 and remains the franchise record; his 230 hits are the team record for a right-handed batter (and second most in franchise history behind only Babe Herman's 241 in 1930), and his .346 average was the highest by a Dodger right-handed hitter in the 20th century until 1997. He repeated as the National League batting champion in 1963 with a .326 average. Davis played in five World Series and was a member of the 1963 World Champion Dodgers.
This 35.5 –inch, approximately 34 –ounce ash bat was manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby, and bears labeling consistent with bats manufactured during the 1961-64 period. This bat has the model number H4 stamped into the knob, which specifically dates this bat to Davis' 1961 season, the only year in which he ordered model 35½-inch H4 bats during that labeling period. The bat has hit marks, ball marks, rack marks, and a cleat mark on the barrel. The handle shows remnants of dried pine tar used to prepare the bat for game use. There is a slight, non-displaced crack that appears approximately 10 inches from the knob which is very difficult to see and does not affect the display of this bat at all.
Tommy Davis has signed this bat in vintage black marker several inches above the barrel label. The signature is clear and smooth, with slight grain effect (see photo.)This is a very fine vintage bat from this two-time Batting Champion and 1963 World Champion Dodger who was one of the most productive hitters of his era. A LOA from Lelands (M. Heffner) accompanies this bat.View Lot Detail page
