One of the greatest players of his generation, Stan Musial is clearly the statistical equivalent of both Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio. During his 22-year Major league career, Musial complied a lifetime batting average of .331 on the strength of 3,630 career hits, including 475 home runs. He played in 24 All Star games, and was a member of three St. Louis Cardinal World Championship teams – 1942, 1944, and 1946. The most popular Cardinal of all time, Musial's dominance of his era can be seen in the fact that he not only was named the National League's Most Valuable Player three times, but he also finished as the runner-up for that award an additional four times. He finished his career in 1963, and was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.
Following his playing career, Musial remained with the Cardinals as a coach and hitting instructor during spring training as well as during the regular season, and held additional front office positions.
This uncracked bat was manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby between 1965 – 1968 for Stan Musial's personal professional use as a coach for the St. Louis Cardinals. This bat is stamped M159 in the knob, a model first made to Musial's specifications in 1953, and which became his favorite model throughout the rest of his career. This bat measures 34.6 inches in length, and weighs approximately 31 ounces. Musial's underlined number 6 is evidenced on the knob in vintage marker, and this well-used example displays ball marks, bat marks, cleat marks, and slight checking upon a rich patina. The labeling of this bat, specifically the centerbrand, is indicative of bats manufactured by H & B in 1966. Musial's personal H & B factory records show six post-career orders of model M159 bats 34.5 inches / 30-32 ounces from 1964 through 1966. More specifically, orders that match the model and dimensions of this bat were shipped to Musial on 4/166 and 6/29/66.
