    Milt Pappas 1965-1969 H & B Game Used Bat

A two time All Star who also pitched a no hitter in 1972, Pappas was a durable pitcher for 17 years with the Braves, Orioles, Reds and Cubs. A control specialist, Pappas pitched in 520 games, starting 465, with 209 wins, 164 losses, 43 shutouts, 1728 strikeouts and a 3.40 ERA in 3186.0 innings pitched. Pappas was also the first pitcher ever to win 200 games without a single 20-win season. He posted 15 or more wins seven times during his career. Following the 1965 season, the Orioles traded Pappas and OF Dick Simpson to the Reds for OF Frank Robinson, in what became one of the worst trades in baseball history. Pappas did not pitch as well for the Reds as he had for the O's, while Robinson won the Triple Crown and led Baltimore to the World Championship. Pappas eventually righted himself, and won 17 games in both 1971 and 1972 with the Chicago Cubs, which included a no-hitter against the Padres in 1972. He retired following the 1973 season.
This 35 inch, approximately 30 ounce Louisville Slugger model D143 bat was manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby during the period 1965-1968. It is a signature model bat, indicating that Pappas had an endorsement contract with the company at the time. This bat shows significant evidence of game use, including ball marks, hit marks, cleat marks, and rack marks. There is a non-displaced crack on the handle, approximately 11 inches from the knob, which does not affect the display of this bat at all. A 4½ inch area of lightened wood appears at the crack site, suggesting the application of tape to repair the crack at some time. Additionally, a piece of wood approximately the size of a dime has flaked off below and to the right of the barrel label.
A LOA from SCD Authentic (D. Bushing / T. Kinunen) accompanies this bat. The bat is graded A6, based on the discolored area on the handle.View Lot Detail page
