Bill Madlock, Jr. played in the big leagues from 1973 to 1987, and during that period was the only right-handed hitter to win a National League batting title. His record of four batting titles as a third baseman would be eclipsed in 1988 by Wade Boggs. It is also the second most by a National Leaguer since 1970 behind only Tony Gwynn's eight. In a 15-season career Madlock, nicknamed "Mad Dog," compiled a .305 batting average with 2008 hits, 163 home runs and 860 runs batted in.
This signature model C235 bat was manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby and contains labeling consistent with the 1973-1975 labeling period. This bat can be specifically dated to the years 1974 and 1975 during that period, matching Madlock's H & B factory records for bats shipped to him from mid-1974 forward. This bat is 35 inches in length and approximately 33.5 ounces in weight. The barrel of this bat is covered with ball marks, hit marks, and rack marks, and demonstrates slight checking above the barrel label. There is a four inch sliver of wood, approximately 1/8 of an inch wide, consistent with the grain, missing from the barrel approximately five inches from the end of the bat. Pine tar remnants are evidenced as part of the handle preparation of this bat. The model number C235 is stamped on the knob, and Madlock's uniform number 18, worn as a member of the Chicago Cubs in 1974 and 1974 appears on the knob in vintage black marker.
This is a rare opportunity to obtain a very early, rookie-era Bill Madlock heavily used and highly presentable game used bat from the period when this three time All Star won his first National League batting title (1985.) In 1979 Madlock was the starting thirdbaseman for the world champion Pittsburg Pirates.
LOA from SCD Authentic (D. Bushing / T. Kinunen.) This bat has been graded A6 based on the small piece missing from the barrel as described above (see photo.) View Lot Detail page
