Nicknamed "Da Meat Hook", Young was a first round draft pick of the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1991 June amateur draft. He debuted with the Cards in 1996, and subsequently played with the Reds and Tigers through 2006. In late 2006, the Washington Nationals lost their first baseman Nick Johnson for nearly a year due to a broken leg. In the following spring, the Nationals invited a number of first baseman to camp, including Young, who won the starting role. In his first game with the Nationals, on opening day, he hit 2 doubles. He went on to have a sizzling first half, reaching the All Star break batting .340, third in the league, and was selected to his second All-Star game - the Nationals only representative. He finished the 2007 season with a batting average of .320-plus., well above his .293 lifetime average.
This uncracked, highly finished black bat has labeling consistent with bats manufactured by Hillerich & Bradsby between 1997 and 2003. This bat is specifically dated to Young's 2003 All Star season with the Detroit Tigers, as evidenced by his uniform number, 25, written on the knob (he wore number 26 with the Tigers in 2002.) This model R205 Louisville Slugger is 34½ inches in length and weighs approximately 33 ounces. Ball marks and hit marks are seen on the barrel of this bat, and significant tape preparation of the handle and knob has been applied. Young has signed this bat with a personal inscription as follows:
"To Jose Jr. Best Wishes Dimitri Young"
The inscription is in silver marker, and has been lightly affected by the grain of the bat (see photo.) This bat displays strongly and is a solid game used example from a significant season in the career of this two-time All Star whose career has been resurrected with the Nationals and was just named MLB's National League Comeback Player of the Year.
