This cap has all the characteristics of a team issued Cincinnati Reds cap, i.e. correct manufacturer's label, size tag, and Major League construction. The #14 applied by black marker under the bill appears to be vintage and applied at the time the cap was issued. The light soiling under the bill also appears to be vintage as well as the perspiration residue in the headband. The cap has been signed on the top of the bill by both Pete Rose and Tony Perez. The cap is a size 7 ¼ and is marked in the inside band with "not for sale" and "display only" (see below for details).
This cap was originally purchased at the Greater Cincinnati Airport (at the Reds gift shop) during the 1988 season by Kevin Clark. Kevin states in his letter of authenticity that this cap was on display on a mannequin in the gift shop and that it was marked "not for sale" and "display only". Kevin inquired about the cap and offered a premium to a store clerk for the cap, who agreed to sell him the item. Kevin obtained the signatures on the cap in person at the stadium. A letter from Kevin accompanies this lot (as does a second letter from vintage equipment expert Darrell O'Mary).
