Steve Carlton 1973 Game Worn, Signed Philadelphia Phillies Road Jersey

Elected into the baseball Hall-of-Fame in 1994, Steve Carlton was one of the most successful pitchers to grace the major league diamond. Affectionately known to Phillies fans as "Lefty", Carlton has the second-most lifetime strikeouts of any left-handed pitcher (4th overall), and the second-most lifetime wins of any left-handed pitcher (11th overall). He was the first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards in a career. He held the lifetime strikeout record several times between 1982 and 1984, before his contemporary Nolan Ryan passed him. One of his most remarkable records was accounting for nearly half (46%) of his team's wins, when he won 27 games for the last-place (59-97) 1972 Phillies. He is still the last National League pitcher to win 25 or more games in one season, as well as the last pitcher from any team to throw more than 300 innings in a season.

This road powder blue knit was worn by Carlton during the 1973 baseball season. Tagged in the collar with a chain-stitched rectangular "Carlton" script swatch tag. Tagged on the tail with a Wilson size 46 wash tag and a "73 Set 2 46" chain-stitched swatch tag (indicative of the year, set number and Carlton's size). Signed on the front in blue above the #32. Light blue metal zipper front. All original, with the exception of a (very well done) professionally restored nameplate on the back. Jersey was sent down to the minors, where another nameplate was affixed after the original Carlton nameplate was removed. All the numbers, logo, and tagging are 100% original. Jersey shows heavy evidence of use, including light soiling on the numbers and logo, heavy wash wear and some loose stitching.View Lot Detail page

Is a blue zipper authentic to the jersey? Shouldn't it be bronze?

I've consulted with a couple Phillies collectors on this, and the original zipper would have been bronze on this jersey. I've also been told that it was common for these zippers to break and be replaced. Given the fact that this jersey had the nameplate removed at one time, I can't say for certain whether this zipper would have been repaired/replaced at the major or minor league level.

      I hope this helps.

      Best,

      Rob
