Making his Major League in 1955 with the Chicago Cubs, Jim King played with the St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants (during their first year in SF) before finding a home with the Washington Senators in 1961. Taken by the Senators on December 14, 1960 in the Major League expansion draft, King became a solid producer for the new franchise. During his six-plus seasons with Washington he hit 88 home runs, with a season high of 24 in 1963. In June, 1967 he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, who in turn sent him to Cleveland a month later for slugger Rocky Colavito.
For fans of the expansion Washington Senators (1961-1971), here is an ensemble that is unbeatable – a game used 1962 Washington Senators road jersey, a game used 1961-62 two-year style cap, and a game used bat, all worn or used by Jim King.
The road gray Washington Senators flannel exhibits moderate to heavy game use. The use is very even and consistent with no holes or thin spots. The "WASHINGTON" font is dark navy block lettering and is all original. The #30 on the back is identical to the Washington front in material and stitching and is also all original. The year (62) and size tags (44) are all original and are found on the left front tail. The Tim McAuliffe tag is also on the left front tail and has been restitched, but is believed to be the original tag. A letter from vintage equipment expert Darrell O'Mary accompanies this jersey. This is a very scarce 2-year style (1961-62) flannel jersey.
Accompanying this jersey is the companion rare, two-year style (1961-62) Washington Senators cap, also worn by Jim King. This McAullife KM Pro size 6 ¾ cap shows serious evidence of game use. The liner has been torn and fastened at the tag, with pulled threads along the inner band. King's uniform number 30 appears on the under bill in vintage marker. This blue beauty with a red W outlined in white is an excellent game used example of a near-impossible style to locate.
The bat in this ensemble was manufactured by the Hillerich & Bradsby Company. It is a signature model with Jim King's name (James King) stamped in script on the barrel as he had an endorsement contract with the company at the time of manufacture. This bat has what is commonly referred to as 1965-68 era labeling. The Model Number K93 is stamped into the knob of this bat. The bat has a natural, or regular, finish which over time has taken on a rich, darker patina. It measures 35 inches in length and currently weighs approximately 31.5 ounces. This bat has a very small crack in the handle that begins 5 inches from the knob. This crack is very slightly displaced and occurs along the grain of the wood, and does not affect the display of this bat at all. The number 30 is evident on the knob of this bat, written in vintage marker. King wore uniform number 30 only during stay with the Senators, from 1961 to 1967, which dates this bat to between 1965 and 1967. This bat exhibits a significant number of game characteristics, including a cracked handle, heavy pine tar residue extending 15 inches down the handle, hit marks, and slight grain separation.
This is an incredible opportunity to pick up a scarcely found ensemble from a player of a defunct Major League franchise.View Lot Detail page
