Keep as many people out of your collection area as possible. Display enough to keep yourself happy and keep the valuables locked in a nice big heavy safe (dont have one?-buy one) . Often change your displays too. I ALWAYS take good care of my Rottweiler. He is the best guard dog I could have ever hoped for .

Re: What do you do to protect your collection?

i can see the news reports now. a sleepy southern community awakes to the sound of .50 cal gunshots zipping through a local home as young kyle hess valiantly tries to defend his carlos guillen shower shoe.

kyle may have to wait until he's 18. at that point though, i fail to see a more appropriate firearm for a young man than the S&W .500 pictured in this thread. this is of course assuming that it wouldn't be feasible for kyle to mount an XM307 in some sort of makeshift guard tower. i'd hate to see kyle unprepared, holding his .50 peashooter, if the resourceful thieves arrived in an armored vehicle.

Re: What do you do to protect your collection?

I would strongly caution anyone from allowing a newspaper/magazine from doing an article on your collection. I knew a person who shared with a local newspaper his HUGE Michael Jordan collection, which was all Upper Deck and a few game used items. The newspaper had a large distribution and did a big story in the Sports section along with a photo. It was all gone within two weeks when someone broke in and stole it. This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening to a collector who appeared in print.

If my friends and family want to see my collection, then they can wait on the sidewalk like everybody else.

With that said, if someone wants your stuff, there isn't anything anyone can do to stop them BUT, an alarm would be helpful. And if you guys do get an alarm, change the code every few Months.

Its always a "friends, friend" that steals stuff....be sure to tell your "freinds" to be quiet about the sh!t.

First of all, I would insure the collection. Then, I only display a few of my Jordan jerseys and the rest are kept in a secure location and easy accessible to be moved elsewhere in case of fire. It's a pity for the fellow Jordan collector who lost of all of it through theft. I hope he was insured.

to griffeyfan: By the way, do you have the link to the article when the local newspaper featured his collection?

Another consideration if to use a PO Box when buying and selling items. I'm sure there are plenty of folks on Ebay that would love to sell you a jersey just to get your address, then come to take it back along with a few more.

Or, they could wait for you at the post office. When you go to your box to pick up your mail, they follow you home and rob you.
