    Hi Marcus,

Judging from some of the photos you've posted already, the Seahawks and Raiders helmets look like they may be real game used helmets. It's hard to tell unless there are photos to study. But from my experience, there are some things to look for to determine if a helmet is game used. It is always helpful to check the inside of the helmet and look for player ID numbers or dymo tape with player names and numbers. Some of the 80s era helmets have distinct date codes on the inside upper part of the helmet, usually a round imprint that has a month and year date code. And sometimes the inside has reconditioning stickers and warning stickers that show the date. Also, look for game wear on the outside of the helmets. If there are gashes and evidence of helmet-to-helmet contact on the outside (particularly the forehead area), this suggests game wear/use. Also check the Getty Images website and look for photos of NFL teams, and this can help you get a sense of what the players have worn each season, and you can compare that way too.

Just acquired this 2009 Minnesota Vikings helmet worn by Albert Young. It was originally recently sold by JO Sports. I was able to acquire it from another collector who I connected with via GUU who graciously offered to sell it to me (thanks Jack!). I was able to find a photo match. A very nice addition to my collection.

Happens to the best of 'em. Just a little while ago AMI had a supposed Steve Largent gamer up for auction, and even listed the two possible games it was worn in. Add to that, it had a COA from the equipment manager. Ok, I don't have the time to tell you all the details, yet, I'm quite positive that helmet was never worn in those games, or, in any game on top of Largent's head. In the end, someone ended up shellin' out $2400, or so, for it. I wouldn't have given more than $300 since some of the components looked legit, just not as a whole.

I suspect this equipment manager found a few extra components and put this Largent helmet together.

I guess I am not still totally clear where the helmet "originated" as I was told originally it was through AJ and this charity and then through the former Buckeye and teammate. Once I have a better understanding I am happy to share, but even though I have strong ideas I really have no true knowledge as one is blaming the other and I still don't have all the information I need to get my money back. I am not trying to withhold information and want to share but at the same time I don't want to keep posting speculations that may change to even make the story more of a tangled mess. I hope that makes sense and is understandable, and neither the charity (which I am still not exactly sure who it is) nor the former player and teammate has so far taken responsibility. Once things start to clear, I will be happy to post what happened, but it is a pretty fluid thing right now and again, don't want to keep the web tangling if I can wait to find out more info to actually help untangle. All I can say for those out there that no source , no matter how airtight it may seem, should be trusted without seeing the product first. Lessons unfortunately others have learned and I just did, but hopefully this will help others from thinking because of a person's stature (or I hate to think a non-profit) that they are above doing something like this.

    UGA-1

I'm with you. Whether it's the good, bad and/or ugly it's nice to have guys like Robert, Curtis, vikingshelmetguy and Mike Pricip around to help a collector out. These guys have lives and careers yet they have always have the time to help a collector out.

Do they want a fee? NO but they do ask for openness and honesty when they are asked for their help and a thumbs up from the above mentioned guys are worth a thousand times more than some LOA from some company and/or individual who feels that they are self-proclaimed "experts" in the field and they charge hundreds of dollars for a worthless piece of paper.

I think it is safe to say that everyone here on this forum has been "bitten in the ass" at one time or another. It is the reason the forum exists. People who really care about the hobby come here in an effort to educate and hopefully prevent the situations like this one with this helmet. Usually,it is a lesson only learned with hard earned cash.
Now, I also love this forum for its "watchdog" mentality that always has an eye open for shady actions and attacks them when they surface. IMO the Hawk helmet story is becoming a tangled web. Guys, I do sympathize with your situation, as I too have been bitten very hard in the past with this same type of scenario.
With that said, use the power of this forum and its members to find where this helmet originated. To use generics when telling the story about its origin doesn't help. People should be held accountable when stuff like this happens wheather they ment it or not. Most times the names of the "innocent" are protected. In this case the names of the "guilty" are being kept secret. All the people in this chain of events, need this helmet brought to their attention so that the innocent can be educated and hopefully prevent this from happening in the future. We are here to help.
