Statistics are not everything. That's why we have the saying, "Lies,damned lies and statistics." Can Bill James give me stats that show teams with horrible fielding shortstops consistently go to the playoffs and World Series? If he can't then his stats are meaningless.

Team w/l as sole determinant of a player's ability, much less his fielding skill, is a weak argument. If you put a 28 year old Jerry Rice on the 2008 Detroit Lions, the Detroit Lions would still suck. That the Lions would suck either way, doesn't prove much about Jerry Rice's skills.

The play Jeter made in the playoff series against Oakland where he went far out of position across the first base line into foul territory to grab an errant throw from the outfield and shovel the ball to Posoda to get the runner at the plate the saved the game for the Yankees and turned the playoff series around and led to their going to the World Series. To Bill James that would just be one more fielding play. But it wasn't just one more ordinary fielding chance, just another stat . That play meant everything. That's why James stats can mean something, but they can also mean nothing.
