No, it's not like MLB where they rub the baseballs in mud to knock off the sheen. They are fresh from the box when they are put into the bag to go to the field. All I know is that I have several store models that I purchased directly from Sports Authority and I have several game used balls and there is something very different about the color and feel. When you handle a fresh game ball, your fingers will turn a redish brown. I am staring a 16 autographed footballs and I can tell which ones are gamers and which ones are store models by the coloring.

nice way to describe the feel of the actual game footballs kj33706. do you know why they have the different consistency from the retail game footballs? do teams add something onto the leather that give it that slick and tacky feel? thanks

You may have heard or been told that these are the same as the store model and I'm sure the look and materials are the same. But the feel and the grip of these balls CANNOT be found with a store model ball. Gamers have a hard to explain slick feel. But at the same time have a tacky feeling. These feel like you can throw them a mile but if someone tosses one to you it could slip right thru your hands. I love the feel of them and when they get autographed the silver sharpie looks awesome. Store models almost have a powdery feel and look and aren't as nice to get autographed. I have several of each way.

I am on the sidelines every home game with the balls as they go in and come off the field. I have often wanted to go outside with these gamers and throw them around wearing receivers gloves. But, being a collector, I can't bring myself to ruining a perfectly good GU item. So I just throw them around the Dome. Same feeling without the grass stains.

Could you please explain why you need a GU ball to "toss around" when retails cost jack and are IDENTICAL except for an imprinted label or two?

If you are just going to toss it around don't buy a game used, just get a retail one. Otherwise, the one member here has a BIN for $175

I don't think the purpose of obtaining a game used piece of equipement is to use it.

Can't help you out with basketballs because I have zero interest in the NBA.
