What a pitcher, my favorite player and Yankee. I'm very glad I saw him a couple more times this year before he retired. His game used uniform he wore in 06 is the pride of my collection and we were able to photomatch it too!
It will be interesting to see if Mussina gets in the HOF as (IMHO) over time the criteria for HOF pitchers goes down with starters get fewer innings and CGs. Maybe some time passing will help his cause.
On another note, this could be a good opportunity for people to post any Mussina GU items they have...I dont have any personally but it would be interesting to see what some of the other members have in their vaults.
I just looked up his numbers. Wow, I've got to say, that I was surprised at how durable he was. Honestly, until I looked, I always thought of Moose as a fragile pitcher. I think that is due to his injuries early in his career with Baltimore. (That is when I was younger and followed him more closely.) However, I must say that as the voting looks right now he is going to be a "near miss".
What is working for him is the fact that he pitched in New York and got more attention/press than say a Blyleven (who pitched in small market towns). After looking at the numbers, I believe both probably should go in. But if voting were fair, he wouldn't go in until after Blyleven went in, because Bert has him beat in K's, Wins, Career ERA, and several other things. That is just my 2 cents.
