ok, just re-read the thread and i think i understand what's going on - you obviously didn't realize that the colts (and other nfl teams) were supplied with practice uniforms manufactured by companies other than the one that supplied the game uniforms. as such the photo of manning sporting a champion practice jersey struck you as an oddity, as unusual. and that's why you thought the jersey was an old stock from 6 years earlier that the colts' equipment folks had dug up for manning.

not sure how this constitutes me splitting hairs.....

I'd love to see images of other teams that supply practice jerseys in the manner that the Colts do...the teams I'm familiar with (not all, of course) used the same supplier for practice and game jerseys, even to go so far as to change tagging and sleeve logos on the practice jerseys to keep current with the game uniform supplier. I'd enjoy seeing other examples.

examples of teams sporting practice shirts that differ from their game shirts in terms of branding aren't difficult to find, not from the period we've been discussing (1998, manning's rookie year) - getty alone offers plenty of examples, some shown below. heck, we can start with my beloved rams:

1998 rams - russell practice jerseys, logo athletic game jerseys:

1999 rams - russell practice jerseys, puma game jerseys:

1998 raiders - champion and russell practice jerseys, nike game jerseys:

1998 seahawks - russell practice jerseys, logo athletic game jerseys:

1998 bills - champion practice jerseys, logo athletic game jerseys:

1998 ravens - russell practice jerseys, starter game jerseys:

did teams also sport practice shirts with brands that matched their game shirts during this time as well? of course, no doubt. and it became more and more the norm leading up to the 2001 deal. but, again, teams did indeed sport practice shirts that differed in branding from their game shirts during this period - and it wasn't an oddity, wasn't uncommon, wasn't unusual... not as far as i can tell.

The 49ers recycled Wilson game worn shirts and used them as practice shirts for years. They wore Wilson prior to 1984 but from 1984 to 1989 wore Russell. During that time they wore both Wilson and Russell practice shirts. Even after the switch to Rebook and Adidas in the late 1990s they still wore some of the Wilson practice shirts. I will post images next week as I am on vacation and dont have access to my images. In fact even during the 2000 to 2005 seasons they wore a mishmash of various practice shirts. Even these were recycled from year to year. I have a Vernon Davis rookie practice shirt that was worn as practice shirt in 2002 by another player.

            Robert:

Impressive photo display...none of those teams were ones I had any practice jersey experience with.

I know of the practice of teams using old game jerseys as practice garb in the 1970s and 80s, so, in that regard, the mixing of manufacturers, I agree, wouldn't be that unusual.

Still, I'm sure that there are collectors of the practice jersey genre that would not have realized either what I pointed out regarding Manning, or what you added later. Bottom line: most of us (including yours truly) learned something, and that's one of the main functions that the Forum has.

but what you pointed out to collectors about manning was incorrect dave - as such i'm not sure what it is you think collectors would not have realized if not for your post. contrary to what you believed, there was nothing odd or unusual about manning sporting a practice shirt that was branded differently than his game shirt. there was nothing odd or unusual about his teammates sporting practice shirts that varied from their game shirts. and there was nothing odd or unusual about other nfl teams that did the same.

I think this thread has run its course....Dave pointed out something he thought to be a rare practice and Robert made his point that he disagreed with how rare this actually was. I am going to go ahead and lock the thread. If anyone has any new insight to add, feel free to email me and we can reopen the thread.
