Don't let these guys get you down on any of this. As many people as have the "snobby" bash any jersey that don't have attitude, there are twice as many that are very helpful. Especially when it comes to photomatching. I'm old school like you and just don't have the time to photomatch things.

I think the photomatch idea was brought up since there was the topic of the number differences. The numbers likely changed from year to year, so it may be an issue with them both being tagged 88. Don't stress it and remember that alot of people ask questions looking to help you out and not bash you down.
