Re: Items given to you by a player
The sole reason I got into game used is because a player gave me a bat. I've been lucky to get a few items. I would NEVER sell them. Too much memory value and to me, in no way does it affect the monetary value. It may not have as much value to another collector, but to me they're priceless and because I'm not selling them, it doesn't really matter. They're going to be passed down to my kids someday.
Items given to me by players
Alex Rodriguez Game Used Batting Glove
Jeff Francouer Game Used Bat
Mike Moustakas Game Used Bat
Lorenzo Cain Game Used Bat
Eric Hosmer Game Used Batting Gloves

Re: Items given to you by a player
Missed out on a lot of stuff from the defunct Greenville Braves (former AA affiliate for Atlanta, now the Mississippi Braves).
At the end of their final game in 2004, players were throwing everything into the stands. EVERYTHING. I just happened to be in the wrong places at the wrong times and couldn't snag anything, because of all the obnoxious fans clawing and scratching their way through the crowd. Saw several people get MULTIPLE jerseys, fielding gloves, batting helmets, etc. EACH.
Then players cleaned out their lockers and came back and handed out all that stuff too. One kid got FOUR bats from Andy Marte (one of the best prospects on the team at that time). I asked the kid if I could have ONE of them...and he yelled NO and snarled at me like I was trying to take food off his plate or something lol.
I have learned that you have to be persistent and being in the right place is very critical. Keep in mind that when a team has just lost and has been eliminated, a player is not thinking about giving stuff away. I still have not seen player's throwing their fielding gloves in the stands.

Re: Items given to you by a player
My two 1995 Cubs BP jerseys (Bob Patterson and Kent Bottenfield) were from the players directly, although not right off their backs. Patterson gave me his on the way out of Wrigley Field after a game, and Bottenfield gave me his by the bullpen after BP. Ozzie Guillen also gave me a BP jersey at Comiskey Park that year, although it was actually handed to me by a clubhouse guy.

I have gotten a few hats, but in general most players say no.

Re: Items given to you by a player
While most of my jerseys (other than 2 1995 Cubs BP jerseys) were not gifted from payers and obtained through the hobby market, I have over 40 caps and roughly 2 dozen bats. Of those, probaby 5 or less WERE not gotten from the players/coaches directly.

Honestly, about 80% of my game used/issue collection is given to me by the players. One man's junk is another man's treasure.

Re: Items given to you by a player
I bought my Brett Ronenberg Australian Baseball League jersey's directly off him.
Really nice bloke. I missed out on his WBC jersey he was ebaying and he sent me all of the above. I had also met him at an Australia vs Canada game and gave him a heap of his trading cards. Really down to earth.

Re: Items given to you by a player
Josh Hamilton signed and gave this bat to my son. It was his game used bat from the 2010 World Series (game 3 inning 6).
