Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????

I have a lot of my bats & other baseball things in storage. The reason? There are a few. Space is a big one. Not having enough space to display 100-200 bats is pretty common in this hobby I bet. Also, maybe I don't want to have them all in my home. Sometimes I'll bring 10 bats to storage and take 10 more home, kinda swapping them out to have different ones around me.
There is NO disrespect involved here. I agree that we have the right to do whatever we want with our own collections. Also, sometimes I load up on some bats that I can use in a trade later, but don't want them in my house per say. There's many reason to keep a storage unit. Sorry you take it as a disrespectful act, but it simply isn't.

I like the answers coming in, makes me understand I little better and nice to see a few that only buy what they can display. I don't find your reasoning disrespectful but nowhere did you also say that you were going to let the bats sit in a storage unit for 30 years to collect dust and never get them out, which happens in the hobby and more towards what I was talking about.

When I moved to Colorado I was getting lectured from my girlfriend and mom for throwing away my graduation gown, my high school items yearbooks, sports awards, ect, my dress green and blues for military purposes, to me I don't need those items. If I won an world series ring that's different, that's a tremendous accomplishment that I can wear and takes up minimal space but everything else will sit in a box until I die then be someone else's problem, why do that is what I think. I guess when I was younger I was a mild hoarder of items and now I understand so I'm trying to get rid of all of them. Im done with the military in Jan and then I will get rid of all my excess sleeping bags, knives, gerbers, flashlights, uniforms, ect.

I spent a year in Iraq and that's the only time my items were stored and I put them at my moms house in a spare room while I was gone. I understand that all items cant be "displayed" per say but to have a storage unit is asinine. That's like putting a motorcycle in storage in the summer, why have it. I didn't say there was any rules to collecting or whatever you are assuming I am simply asking a question. If you don't appreciate an item enough to have it in your house why have it is my question, not saying that you cant or anything the lynch mob is assuming.

I have always collected just so I could keep everything from everyone else. I am a filthy, greedy, hoarder with my own self storage business. I don't make any money at it, because all the storage units are full of my stuff. I have trailers full of mediocre to poor game used stuff of every player you can imagine.

And you can't have any of it. My estate planner will deal with the mess when I die. I just know I don't want anyone to have it. Those are my collecting rules.

My friend, your original topic post is insulting to everyone. Going on a rant against folks who have...for whatever reason...placed something in "storage" is a bit of a psychotic tirade, don't you think? I think we all have something is "storage" for our own reasons.

Do you own a safe? If so, do you have anything in it? That's "storage". So are we to say "Shame on YOU! Take it out and sell it to someone NOW!"? Someone could actually argue displaying items in your own house is keeping them in storage. After all, it's locked up away from everyone else, right?

Totally off topic and reading way to much into detail of the question at hand. I was asking a question. This was more directed to those that continue to collect and place items in storage units. Im not talking about closets in a house or a side room in your house with your excess collection that is readily accessible, Im talking about collectors that keep compiling items in "storage units" that never get them out. My question to them is why they do that and explained why I don't, nothing to a wedgie over lol!

I was just going to take them to the local army/navy surplus and see if they want to buy some of it and if not take the rest besides the weapons to the rescue mission or list a few sleeping bags on ebay, there has to be a camper or two out there that might be able to help me out.

So because I won't sell you an item in storage I'm not respectful, courteous, caring or generous?

I see zero correlation between not selling an item in storage and being respectful, courteous, caring and generous.

I ask myself questions all the time about why people do or don't do the things they do and it always comes back to this; because that's what they decided to do or not do.

                      Then I move on.

                        jbean023,

It's all good. I understand the gist of what you were trying to say. And I also understand your discomfort over the apparent deterioration of the good nature in society.

But please keep in mind, a lot of the problems can be traced right back to what we say and do. When you share a feeling in an overzealous, all-encompassing display of supreme power, like stating that people who place their stuff in storage are disrespectful to other collectors, you have taken on a liberal mindset.

It's kind of like telling the American public they will all buy health insurance whether they want it or not...and in doing so, will pay for people who can't afford it or don't want to work for it. And if you don't do as I say, I will make you pay a fine that grows exponentially from year to year. That's socialism. That's anti-American.

And you wonder why a lot of us are a bit on edge these days? The day that mindset takes over in our hobby, I'll be the first to exit stage left.

I don't really get into politics talk because that leads to years of conversation and the fact that the USA is going downhill is an understatement. Our rights go out the door left and right.

Ill have to go back and re read what I typed but I wasn't meaning to say it is disrespectful I was saying if I DID that I WOULD feel disrespectful, Im not trying to tell anyone how to be or what to do with their items was just a question to get a feel of what others thought.

I have a best friend that lives off those people so that's why I asked, he goes weekend by weekend and heads off to storage unit auctions. They could be auctioned from non payment, death, or other situations but some of these units have amazing items in them that people one just don't care about or have forgot about. And when it comes to game used items I would be worried about the items getting stolen one and two I would want to use a climate controlled facility which I imagine costs a pretty penny. Some of these great items that are resurfacing from the past were in storage units and are in horrible shape due to lack of care.

To me its like watching that pickers show from the guys from Iowa they go to these houses and these pickers have everything known to man and a lot of the stuff is ruined or at least damaged. You pull up to a house and there's a grumpy old man that has everything under the sun and does nothing with the items but let them get ruined and doesn't want to sell them. Yes its America you can do what you want but I don't understand the concept or logic behind it.

I did go back and read and I said "To Me" so its just my opinion and how I would feel, I'm not attacking others and telling them to believe like that its just a question. Just like are you for or against the death penalty I gave my opinion and asked for others. And yeah its all good I'm not here to argue or persuade others I am just simply asking for all the others that get their panties in a bunch is their business I am simply just having a discussion, laughing most of the time because I laugh when people get hostile in a non serious situation.
