Jeff Scott's website, www.birdbats.com has a great page on identifying gamers.

Also, Vince Malta's Louisville Slugger book is a must!!

Here is some information regarding, and samples of, the practice of H & B registering player's names, bat model numbers, etc. The info below is charted as follows:

Player name or H & B model number / Date filed with U.S. Patent Office /
    / Registered date

    George "Babe" Ruth / Oct. 4, 1920 / Sept.20, 1921
    Johnny Bench / Feb. 17, 1976 / Nov. 2, 1976
    Pete Rose / Sept. 28, 1978 / Sept. 11, 1979
    Jim Rice / July 18, 1979 / April 28, 1981
    David Parker / July 18, 1979 / April 21, 1981

    K55 / April 27, 1973 / April 30, 1974
    R17 / April 27, 1973 / April 30, 1973
    S2 / April 27 , 1973 / April 30, 1974
    M110 / July 27, 2004 / Nov. 15, 2005
    P72 / July 27, 2004 / Feb 7, 2006
    C243 / July 27, 2004 / March 21, 2006

If the registered trademark appears next to the player's name, or next to the model number, the bat would have been manufactured AFTER the registered date. Example: A bat with the registered trademark following Pete Rose's name would have to have been manufactured on September 11, 1979 or later.

Thanks to historian Dave Grob for providing the initial research cited above.

Some of Louisville slugger models have registered trademarks like the R43. The other one I can think of is the K55.

The larger version of the LS label with no rergistered "R" trademrk symbol by the R in LOUISVILLE SLUGGER is 1980-83, while the smaller oval LS label with the same lack of the circled R would be 1984-85.

Is there an "copyright" symbol after the "Slugger"?
