          Re: July pick-ups

          Sheffield11,

Thank you for finding that getty photo. It's definetly the same bat. Looks like Manny used two different Sam bats on 4-29-07 vs the Yankees, one with a silver cross and one with just the maple leaf sticker on the knob.

When I got the bat in, it was dated 4-4-06 on the top of the barrel and nothing written on the knob just the "made in canada" maple sticker on the knob.

The pine tar was still pretty tacky and I had a hunch that it might have been used earlier this year but the taped knob had me guessing as it look like a late 2006 season Manny tape job.

I previously found a photo on Corbis of Manny vs Orioles on 4-26-07 swinging a similar bat with tape job and no uniform number written on the end of the knob and I thought it looked like the bat I have. Now that you found that getty image of Manny vs Yankees on 4-29-07, I'm sure its the same bat in the photo vs the Orioles, the white mark matches up and also the pine tar application. I'll post some better pics of the match later.

          Thanks again, Bobby

Noted the discussion by Vintagedeputy and TNTtoys regarding Brian Giles bats. I picked this one up in Feb 1999. Wondered if you folks had ever seen a Brian Giles St Louis Cardinal bat? Here are a few pictures of his H238 LS.
Information on this bat would be appreciated. Thanks,

On the Giles bat... yes, you have something fairly unusual, but not 100% surprising. Recently, there was a discussion on this forum regarding LVS bats with wrong teams printed for certain players. Two examples were given:
              Tino Martinez, Baltimore Orioles
              Benny Agbayani, Philadelphia Phillies
I'd chalk yours up as another LVS blunder. I'd also keep it if I were you -- you have an interesting collectible.

My only question would be whether or not Giles actually used the bat... Giles did wear #22 for a couple of years in Cleveland. Is it his bat? The timing of your purchase is just after his last season with this #, so it would make sense to me that it's his bat... but there is also the chance the bat was part of the Cardinals organization. When you bought the bat, did you receive any provenance?

                TNTtoys,
Bat was purchased 022199 from Sportswarehouse, paid $31 (price was right), and no provenance provided. They just listed it a Cardinal game bat of Brian Giles. I only collect Cardinal bats and tried to find information that he was ever part of the Cardinal organization but no luck. I thought it an error bat before, but wondered if some of you folks might have any information on it. Also wondered if it was/is an error how many more are out there? I don't think players just order one bat at a time. I have never seen another. Appreciated your response.

There was a rumor in 2005 that Giles was headed to the Cardinals (http://www.sportingnews.com/yourturn...ic.php?t=26901) but if you got the bat in '99, I'm stumped......maybe there was a deal in place that fell through and someone at LS started making bats prematurely?

Diamondbacks prospect Justin Upton (B.J.'s little brother) wore and signed this jersey on his last day in single-A ball, with Visalia; he's now with double-A Mobile, and could even be up with the big club by the end of the year - they say he's that good.

For a pink jersey, it's not bad looking!

I enjoy picking up "oddball" jerseys of DBacks-related players. After the team's #1 draft pick a couple of years ago, Stephen Drew (J.D.'s younger brother) held out for part of the year and went to play with the indy Camden Riversharks, they auctioned a couple of his jerseys to benefit charity after he finally signed and left that team, and I got the road jersey - got him to sign it a couple of months ago.

I've also managed to get Team USA jerseys for a couple of DBacks players or prospects, including Mark Reynolds' '06 road jersey, worn in the series where they defeated Cuba in the final game of the tournament.
