Brooklyn Dodger Hall-of-Fame catcher Roy Campanella, along with teammate Jackie Robinson, is considered one of the pioneers of breaking the color barrier in Major League Baseball. After starring for nine years in the Mexican and Negro leagues, Campy debuted with the Dodgers on 4/20/1958. He quickly established himself as one of the game's greatest stars, and was named the National League's Most Valuable Player three times, in 1951, 1953, and 1955. He led the Dodgers to five National League pennants, and the 1956 World Series championship. His career was cut short in 1958 when a tragic car accident left him paralyzed. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969.
This bat is a Roy Campanella game-used professional model baseball bat manufactured by the Hillerich & Bradsby Company. The bat has Campanella's name stamped in block letters on the barrel as he did not have an endorsement contract with the company either at the time of manufacture, or at any time during his career. This bat was manufactured in what is commonly referred to as 1950-60 era labeling. However, this bat is specific to the period between 1950-53. The model number G80 is stamped into knob of this bat. The bat has a natural, or regular, finish. It measures 35.5 inches in length and weighs approximately 34.8 ounces.
A review of Roy Campanella's personal Hillerich & Bradsby factory shipping records show numerous orders of model G80 bats during this labeling period. Orders that match the specific dimensions of this bat were shipped to Campanella in 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1953.
This bat exhibits a significant number of outstanding game use characteristics. Many ball marks and ball stitch impressions are visible on the barrel, as well as cleat marks and blue rack marks. There is a moderate coat of pine tar on the handle. Additionally, a "T" has been placed on the knob in black paint. It is noted that a handle/barrel crack has been professionally repaired and is virtually unnoticeable.
This bat has been certified authentic (G55719) and graded GU 8.5 (81974743) by John Taube and Vince Malta of PSA/DNA, whose Letters of Authenticity and Grading accompany this bat.
This is a very unique opportunity to obtain a truly rare game used baseball bat that is virtually un-improvable. Of all post-war Hall of Famers, Campanella's game used bats are among the most difficult to obtain. Only one example is currently listed in the MEARS database, and there have been only a few Campy bats that have been offered in the past 10 years.
