Jim may want to chime in but all his orders for personal use on his M1728 model should be UNFINISED and he had an order in Galen finish. This bat looks to have natural varnish finish. Hope this helps.

Of all the big name players from the modern era, nobody, other than maybe George Brett or Cal Ripken, seems to have so many suspect looking bats, or other equipment for that matter. There are others that come to mind but Mattingly's bats always leave me scratching my head and wondering.

George is correct - in Donnie's records, only Galen or no finish M1728 bats were sent to the New York Yankees. There are several orders of M1728 that include shipments to Baseball Miscellaneous, Promotions and even to Major League Baseball. The seller is indicated the bat is issued and has no use and from the pictures, it appears to be unused as well. I have only seen unfinished M1728 Mattingly bats that I felt Donnie ever used - never seen a finished bat with use in the market........
