Re: What's Everyone Do For A Living??

It's been almost 2 years sine I posted this:

What do I do for a living? Good question...

As my father once told me (and this quote comes from a great book, 'The Richest Man in Babylon'):

'Always remember that no matter what job you have - you are ALWAYS working for yourself.'

That said, for a living I am a Father, a Husband, a Son, a Brother, etc. and I support my family as Field Supervisor / Trainer for a Contract Cable Installer.

In my 'previous life', I have worked for some of the largest companies in the world - GE, Chase Manhattan (JP Morgan Chase), US West (Qwest), Nike, Rawlings and the DoD (12 years USAF/RES/ANG) as a Weapons Specialist on F-4s, f-16s and a Crew Chief on C-130s. I also attended Texas Tech (on and off for 3 years - '83, '85, '87) and the University of North Texas ('89-'91). I intend to go back and finish my degree - I have over 170 hours (well more than most degrees require) because I couldn't decide on a major.

I have also had some interesting 'side jobs' over the years - the Easter Bunny at a Mall, a 'Security' officer at Coors Field above the Bullpens in 1995, an extra in a few movies while growing up in Dallas (Including Oliver Stone's 'Born on the 4th of July' & 'JFK' - I got to meet both Tom Cruise and Gary Oldman - and I was chosen for a speaking part by Oliver Stone in 4th of July. It was never used, but I got directed by Oliver Stone for about 20 minutes!)

I am awaiting a settlement from an auto accident that happened last year and may go PT or even quit if I get enough to pay my bills off and go back to school at Johnson&Wales and pursue my Liberal Arts Degree and a Degree in Sports Management. The wife and I plan to move to AZ when the kid graduates in couple of years - great place to be to become an MLB Scout!

    Sorry for the 'NOVEL'...
So I thought it might be time for an 'update'...

The settlement wasn't as big as I had hoped - paid down a few bills and added a few items - and haven't yet gone back to school. Considering the 'on-line' route.

As of June this past year (2012) I am now the Director of Safety and Risk Management for the same cable contractor (for Comcast) that I have been with since 2005.

We have absorbed three more contractors since my 1st post on this thread (Jan 11, 2011) and now cover almost the entire state of Colorado. We are the second largest cable company in Colorado next to Comcast.

The wife and I still have dreams of relocating to Phoenix, AZ (year round baseball) and starting my own custom bat company ( I use to make bats - hand turned - PT for Rawlings at Coors Field).

Our son graduated High School last May (2012), so now we are more free to concentrate on what we want to do.

    - Smitty

I own several IT and Consulting companies in the Tampa Bay and Orlando area. Server/Managed Hosting Services, Emergency Management - Disaster Recovery and Debris Management Software, and FEMA Public Assistance Grant Management Consultancy for local governments.

I am always looking to invest in/purchase new businesses.

It is my dream to own an MLB team one day.
