Im not hating on ya. If you have the money to do it more power to you. I just think when you see legit Pujols gamers go for 800-1500 like Dave's for example, it's hard for me to see paying that much for a prospect or a rookie. Now if he turns out to be great that's one thing but he could be one injury away from a what could have been. Hopefully him and the Rays are great the next five years and we don't have to hear about the Yankee's for awhile.

Paying 1400.00 for a bat before the guy goes 1-20 (.050) in the World Series...
Priceless
laugh it up. But when the guy tears it up next year and leads the team to a eventual world series title i will have the last laugh. not to mention he's only 23. if you could pick up a gamer from a future superstars rookie season that is absolutley beat to hell, and the guy wins ROY, for 1300 actually, i dont think you would hesitate. I'am not upset one bit. I am quite happy with my bat. And i got to see him a few weeks prior in person have his first 3 HR game. SO take your comments and stick them up your a**

What are your criteria(s) for overpaying for an item? can you give us an example?
Sure. If the item will not stop entering my mind throught the course of a week. If it is from the cardinals era. If the item is game used, and shows excellent use that erases doubt. If i know deep down i will not see this kind of item again for a long long time.

I collect my beloved Chicago Cubs - (go ahead insert joke here)
Advantages - I am young, not married, no kids and have some money to spend on items I want!! Collecting the Cubs has given me the oppurtunity to meet and build relationships and even friendships with other Cubs collectors.
Disadvantages - Well there is a TON of competition, which drives the prices UP UP UP!! I cant afford $5,000 for say Maddux final cubs jersey, or even $4,500 for a Glenn Beckert flannel. Well I could afford these items, but then I would not be able to buy anything else for the entire year, then this hobby would become boring to me. I enjoy looking at my collection and seeing the new items I have aquired on a regular basis.
Another disadvantage is that us true Cubs collectors, once an item has made it's way into our collection it is almost like it is locked in a vault. So finding some of the older items proves to be VERY tough!! That being said am I ever going to find a SUTCLIFFE JERSEY??? jk....well kinda!!
All said and done, I enjoy collecting my Cubbies and wouldn't change it for anything!! Now if they could only get to a FLIPPIN World Series!!!

Adam...interesting. when Arod was with Seattle, Texas, and now with New York, I still continued to collect his stuff. I realize many collectors are more into collecting players on their team. Once that players leaves, the interest isn't there anymore. I'm a collector of the player, not the team as much. However, I would prefer my favorite player, who I collect, to play on my favorite team.
Funny how Arod ended up in New York...my favorite team!
tony,
i agree with you on this. the difference is, i collect Alfonso Soriano who started his career with my favorite team (Yankees), but still collect his stuff even though he has been on 3 different teams since then. i don't, however, feel the need to collect everything from every team he has played for. if it is a nice piece from any of those teams, i will make a move for it. i think it actually gives me more chances to pick up something nice as some people will sell when a player leaves their favorite team. the exception is Soriano Yankee game used. i would buy most Yankees gamers even if duplicate items are already in my collection.

Larry Bird and MJ. Disadvantages: First, the hobby is loaded with fake game used items of both. Second, when you find something legit it's never cheap. Advantages: Two of the greatest players ever and good investment potential for both.

The Yankees happen to be my team too. The disadvantage is the premium that you get from collecting the Yankees since they're such a great following and great history of this franchise.
On the other hand, the great history of the Yankees does make a players career more storied and interesting.
Re: Advantages and disadvantages of collecting your player(s)
Almost every bat in my collection - with the exception of a few really high dollar modern day player bats, were under $100. I can really get any item I want for a decent price...and with the amount of Cards collectors out there, I can usually work out a trade for something. We are a tight knit bunch....

Big disadvantages of collecting one player is the possibility of a trade and how that changes your feelings. I was a huge Adam Dunn collector because he was my favorite player for the Reds. Now that he will be playing with another team, I just won't feel the need to pick up any of his other items. Guess that makes me appreciate guys like Barry Larkin even more.
