    Graig,
Simply beautiful... I love the faces... the eyes are so deep...

but someone said it about a previous painting of yours... The Maris and the Ruths below... I feel like they are moving... you really capture the feel of the action... it is almost like I am there...

    Beautiful work

    Hey all,

I haven't posted anything here in a while, so for those of you who are interested, here's some of the stuff I've finished since:

    Lou Gehrig, 1925, 16" x 20"

    Stan Musial, 1942, 16" x 20"

    Mickey Mantle, April 14, 1951, 9" x 12"

    Willie Mays, 1955, 9" x 12"

    Derek Jeter, 200, 11" x 14"

    Babe Ruth, June 25, 1920, 28" x 50"

    Babe Ruth, November 4, 1934, 50" x 64"

    Roger Maris, October 1, 1961, 38" x 52"

    And a few random in-progresses:

    Mickey Mantle, May 14, 1955, 9" x 12"

    Red Ruffing, 1936, 16" x 20"

    Babe Ruth, 1918, 30" x 34"

    Lou Gehrig, 1938, 18" x 24"

    Hope y'all dig 'em!!

I have enough trouble affording the things I currently collect. I love art and baseball but cannot afford to indulge both. I really enjoy vintage baseball photography which is about as close as my budget lets me come to art. I do have one piece of original comic art depicting Clemente. Revolutionary comics came out with a Clemente issue in 1992. I am a huge Clemente fan so on a whim I called the company and asked if I could purchase a page. They said sure and asked me which I wanted. I purchased this splash page for $100.00. I think it was the best in the book and now wish I had bought more of them. Nonetheless it is cool to own a one of a kind item featuring the great one.

How my Mantle painting is evolving, hoping to be done with it this week

    Original image:

Need to make the face a lot more realistic and then will make the bat look more realistic too!

Ok so LaVern Brock was mentioned earlier in this thread so I thought I would share some pics from an Indians piece I commissioned for my office. I will post more pics as things progress.

Had this painted in Baghdad after we invaded it in '03. The Iraqi guy that painted it said he did a lot of family photo paintings for Saddam Hussein. This is one of the center pieces of my collection.

    Hey all,

Just got these back from the photographers, too:

    Moe Berg, 1935

    Ed Kranepool, 1963

    Eddie Collins, 1909

    Mickey Mantle, 1956

A motley crew/crue indeed. The Mantle is actually a redo, as the original was...ahem...lost. Not cool.

Anywho, I would love to hear any thoughts you want to throw my way. And ideally, I hope you like all four, but I'll settle for three. Actually, I'll settle for one.

Thank you so much, godwulf - that's quite the compliment!!! One of the main things I really strive for is creating a believable space and atmosphere with light and color, but an image having motion and fluidity is definitely a close second. I'm really glad you think it works!

Every time I look at "Ty Cobb, 4/14/08", I could swear that I see Cobb and the umpire actually moving. Cobb is almost vibrating with the tension of being about to swing, and the umpire's body is tensed and just about to take a small step forward. Incredible!

Whoa, thanks for all of the really kind words, guys - I sincerely appreciate them all. I'm just supremely grateful that y'all have any positive response to it all, as it's still so weird for me to put it all out there. I guess that's the insecure artist talking...and man, he can be loud.

Hey, not even in the same league as Graig's paintings, of course, but...Topps auctioned off this original artwork (signed by Gonzo) several years ago, and I was the winning bidder. It was later featured in an SI article on 'odd collectibles".
