Crazy stuff. To me iconic cards are the T206 Honus, 52 Topps Mickey Mantle and Nolan Ryan's rookie card. Anything after 1980 is just overproduced or one of many variations of insert cards. hammer i thought that card would get me rich also. i stockpiled van poppel and scott erickson like they were gold.

I don't get it. I know what "iconic" means, but I'm not entirely sure the writer of this piece does; I certainly don't understand what makes him believe that some of these cards - Canseco, Griffey, Mattingly - are well described by it. And what does he mean when, in referring to the '89 UD Griffey card, he writes, "This card represented the very height of baseball card collecting."?

"very height" I would interpret as pinnacle .... can only go down from there

The Griffey, imo, is one of the most recognizable cards in the hobby.

Agreed. It would probably be more accurate to describe it as the beginning of the end for the hobby of card collecting.
