I was wondering about the front bumper on this helmet. It appears to be brand new when compared to the condition of the helmet. Did the cosigner give any info on how the helmet was obtained? Thanks! -

the are a couple of things are going on here... the bumper is indeed in good condition but the condition is also exaggerated due to photo contrast issues which have caused the whites to appear overly stark. this is also apparent when looking at the white center stripes in the lot photo of the back of the helmet.
with that said, i've found that the condition of these bumpers can vary widely regardless of the game use of the helmet. the plastic shield that protects the "bike" logo is often found to be yellow with age, brittle and torn while other times it can be found in almost pristine condition. same with the layer of foam rubber glued to the underside of the bumper - at times it can be found to yellow and brittle with age and yet other times this foam rubber can be found in like new condition as well. imo game weather conditions most likely played a big part in how these bumpers look today, especially rain. i also believe post game cleaning agents likely contributed to their current condition.
anyway, here are a couple of other well-worn vintage bike helmets with bumpers that are in very good condition...
to answer your other question, the helmet is from the collection of a very well known vintage sports memorabilia collector who said that it was obtained directly from gerald riggs. hope this helps...
