Is there anyway to get the chinstrap he wore with this helmet? Wondered how it's PhotoMatched, without using a hard cup Riddell chinstrap that has plastic upper buckles?

This is the helmet being auctioned with a "soft cup" retail strap.

This is the chinstrap used in the game, obviously different.

Hope I'm not being too picky, just wondering if it's possible to get/find the original?

imo a helmet can certainly be photomatched despite a different or missing chinstrap - the same goes for a different or missing facemask. in fact it's possible to conclusively photomatch a helmet even after a decal change, a change in chinstrap and a change in facemask due to helmet scarring (gouging). but these days it's pretty much impossible to match a pre-reconditioned helmet to a post-reconditioned helmet due the sanding and primer filler that takes place during the process.

as far as getting our hands on the chinstrap you see in the photo is concerned, i doubt it very much but i will ask. if a player changes to a new helmet it's not uncommon for him to keep his old, broken in chinstrap. and it's not at all uncommon for a player to give his chinstrap to a fan.

as far as the helmet itself is concerned, it's a dead-on match.

Thanks for the response. In no way was I discrediting the "game used" aspect of this helmet. I personally just like to have the original chinstrap when buying game used helmets. It's just a preference, and didn't mean to take any shots at anyone regarding the auction. I know how hard it is to get your hands on "team colored" Riddell chinstraps, and I have to discredit most "modern" helmets for sale on Ebay, etc... due to the infamous "missing chinstrap". Thanks again for taking the time to get back to me.

i'm with you on the chinstrap thing, always great to have the original strap that came with the helmet! in fact i'm exactly like you when it comes to leather jaw pads and the vintage football helmets i collect. original chinstraps, jaw pads, facemasks and facmemasks clips are all important aspects of any game used football helmet - unfortunately, given these items are helmet "accessories" which are easy to remove, change, replace and dispose of, they are often absent when a helmet eventually makes it to the collecting market. thanks for the great questions about this item jhunt!
