This is a little offtopic, but I need some help on a related item:

I have a question regarding Dobbins COAs. I have a Matt Williams '95 Home Jersey with the "Purchased from SF Giants Stamp" and a COA that reads - "Home Knit Game Jersey" Is this a game used jersey? Just wondering if Dobbins sold issued stuff and how he made the notations in COAs

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi I'm new to this forum, although I have watched everyones comments for the past month. I'm very impressed with the knowledge of many of the collectors. I have collected Autographs for the last 20 years 99% obtained personally. 600 jerseys, 400 baseballs, numerous game used items. Living in the San francisco Bay Area, I have followed Bonds probably as close as anyone else. When Jeff Kranz liquidated his collection of Bonds equipment I purchased many of his best items.

With this being said between 1993-1999 I had never seen Bonds wear a Russell Jersey. I have owned several game used jerseys, all rawlings. The scary thing is this item comes with a hologram and a certificate from Bonds. Although these holograms are a joke because they can easly be removed from a far less expensive legit item such as a baseball, photo, etc., and placed on a jersey. What worries me is that this item has that certificate. I believe this item 100% was purchased as a legit gamer, but from who originally? Hoskins?

I recently purchased a Bonds 2001 game used bat from Hoskins that had a crack in the handle. I purchased the bat for a few thousand, after researching this forum it is an exact photo match to the homerun bat at lelands, that this forum proved not to be a homerun bat. The only difference is that the Homerun inscription was removed. I 100% believe it is game used bat, but it was misslabeled by Hoskins or Bonds. That same day in Hoskins office he tried to sell me a signed Jersey road Russell that he said was from 94. I polietly declined because I knew Bonds didn't wear Russell. He gave me some story how Bonds would switch back in forth to keep collectors and authenticators guessing. Weak?

All I have to say is you can't trust a hologram, a COA, or even a ball player.

Marichal 27 I would love to see photo's of that 1999 Jersey, and intrest in selling it.

To the forum, I am in search of Bonds game used premium items. The guy is a complete A--hole, I have met him several times, but an unbelievable ball player steroids or not.

I purchased my first Giants piece from Dick Dobbins in 1983. And through 1996, the last year Dick made a Giants bulk purchase, I purchased numerous Bonds jerseys, caps, shoes, and bats from him. It is my experience that Bonds wore Rawlings in 1994. I own a 1994 Giants road Bonds with Dick's stamp and original COA identifying me as the purchaser; it is a Rawlings. According to Dick, although the team wore Russell, Bonds preferred Rawlings and instructed the equipment manager to order Rawlings uniforms at Bonds' own expense. At the end of the season, Bonds would "settle the tab" and keep all his Rawlings uniforms. Of course, one or two Rawlings jerseys per year would be "retained" by the equipment manager and provided to Dick.

In 1994 and 1995, "game ready" Bonds Russell uniforms were delivered by Russell. At the end of the season, Dick received these jerseys in his bulk buy because they were considered team property, and sold them as "game issued." In fact, he had these jerseys hanging in his usual booth at the PMA Antique Show in San Mateo, California, for $800 for a couple years.

I am providing this information for educational purposes only. And I am offering no opinions about the Bonds jersey pictured in the above post.

Howard is correct. Bonds used only Rawlings jerseys from 1993-1999. Here is a scan of one of his '99 home gamers.

You make a very good point . Rudy made a good point as well. I guess I spoke before I did my investigating. I guess it really is getting down to not trusting anything but a very good photomatch or getting it off of the players back. Even then you better have that documented by photo or video for proof. Like someone said on this forum, this is a billion dollar business, so you are bound to have crooks trying to make a buck off of people like myself who trust way too many people. It just kills me to see a person who is already a millionare several times over trying to scam someone for less than $10,000 This is once again why this forum is so great about 95% of the time.

Just as a point of clarification because I know nothing about this or any specific Bonds jersey. I wanted to remind everyone that a year ago Barry came out and claimed that many of the items that were sold with his own hologram and LOA were frauds and the former manager of his game used line was supposedly selling stuff that was not authentic. I am not saying this is or is not fake but based on what Barry told the press, who could believe anything coming from this guy. If he is saying the merchandise and game used items from his own company are bogus I would not touch anything of his with a ten foot pole.

Good points made kingjammy24. I was just trying to make the point to randarino to not feel like he has a fake just because there are no pics of Bonds wearing a jersey like this. I was just encouraging him to keep looking. I also understand your point about a photomatch. While your examples are a bit to the extreme I do get what you are trying to say. Kinda like saying there are no photos of McGwire shooting up steriods so it didn't happen. Ha Ha I wasn't trying to get something started, I just felt like he was being called out on the jersey in a way. It does feel like in this hobby something is fake until proven real, which may be the way it should be. Great job kingjammy on pointing out my mistakes. I should have put more thought into my post. Now can you help me out on the 1999 All Star game jerseys I questioned in another post? Also was the Anniv. patch worn in 93 and 94. Thanks again guys

It's it amazing how some people have nothing better to do that waste time trying to discredit other people. How sad. To anyone who is interested in the Bonds jersey, everyone should know that sometimes the person trying to discredit items is making a PERSONAL attack.

The Bonds jersey has autenticity, and is guaranteed authentic. Unlike some collecters, I don't make up my own LOAs.

I recently purchased a game worn Canseco Rangers BP jersey from 19994 that many questioned here because it was made by Majestic. They said only Rawlings and Russel made those that year and in all the photos of Canseco from 1994 he only wore Russel jersey with the anniv. patch. Mine has the anniv. patch, is the right size, and shows good use. I thought for sure I got burned until 2 days ago I was flipping through my cards and found one Pinnacle card clearly showing Jose wearing my Jersey. A Majestic jersey with the Anniv. patch. I could match it from the holes around the patch and the loose threads on the Rangers text. Just because there is no photo evidence doesn't mean they didn't wear it. It may have been the one Bonds was wearing when he discovered he didn't like how the Russel jerseys fit. Nice jersey. It has a Bonds hologram so don't worry about what other people say. Maybe a photo will surface soon. Good Luck

Great point, however, cosidering how many photos of Bonds are available specifically from the 1994 season (Getty, Corbis), and the extensive search up to this point by Lon Lewis and me to find one, why can't one be located?

It appears some of the Forum readers ar well versed in searching and locating specific photos. I welcome any reader to post such a photo of Bonds wearing a road jersey in 1994 with the Russell logo on the sleeve.

i agree that simply because someone can't find a photo of something doesn't mean it didn't happen. however, when you're dealing with an anomaly or an aberration, how do you justify it without any solid evidence?

you justified your canseco majestic bp because you were able to find photo evidence. given that this jersey is an anomaly, howard is simply asking for any evidence that bonds wore russell in 1994. it seems to be the diligent thing to do.

todd, while this is technically true, it's some faulty reverse logic. based on this logic, collectors should purchase anything because it'd be technically impossible to prove a player didn't wear it. a 2004 clemens size 40 jersey? sold! you can't prove he didn't wear it! a pujols jersey with the nob spelled "puholz"? sold! you can't prove he didn't wear it! since when should purchasing decisions be made on the basis of being unable to prove a player didn't wear it? it's almost impossible to prove something didn't happen. as i've said before, this hobby involves leaps of faith and to that end, purchasing decisions should be governed by what is likely.

todd, you can't be serious. despite cheating on his wife, cheating on his taxes, and cheating on the game of baseball, you accept bonds' word with no questions asked? stick a hologram on it and it can't possibly be bad?

anyway, russell began supplying the giants in 1992. bonds joined in 1993. his first encounter with russell would've taken place in 1993. that is, if he had decided to try russell and didn't like them, it likely would've happened in 1993. of course i could be wrong. however, prior to spending $6,500 on a jersey, i'd like some sort of evidence that bonds ever wore russell in 1994. wouldn't you? or would you spend that sort of dough based solely on the notion that you can't prove didn't wear it?

Back in 1995, I purchased several Giants road jerseys from the exclusive dealer of Giants jerseys, Dick Dobbins. Included in my purchase was a 1993 Will Clark, 1994 Bonds and 1994 Matt Williams. When I received these shirts, I was extremely concerened that they were made by Rawlings and had the square Rawlings tag in the tail. I immediately spoke with Dick, and he informed me that several players did not like the Russell shirts, and wore Rawlings brand. As such, the Rawlings logo could not be seen on the sleeve, as Russell was the approved MLB supplier. The sleeve was void of any company logo. Since that time, I have spoken with Lon Lewis, who is considered by many to be one of the foremost authroities on Giants jerseys. He confirmed that Bonds only wore Rawlings in 1994, and also indicated that he has never located a photo or video of Bonds wearing a Russell brand shirt in 1994. Does any Forum member have a photo of Bonds wearing a Russell game jersey during the 1994 season?
