Bill Buckner 1987California Angles Home Jersey

    $800.00

Description taken from a Robert Edwards Auction

California Angels home jersey worn by Bill Buckner in 1987. The white knit jersey is lettered “Angels” across the front and features the number “6” on the left breast and reverse. “Buckner” is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in red on blue tackle twill. A California Angels team patch adorns the left sleeve. Situated on the left front tail are a “Rawlings 44” label and an adjacent strip tag that displays both the set number and year (“1 87”) stitched in black. Buckner has inscribed the jersey “Bill Buckner – 11/10/87” in blue Sharpie (“9”) in the collar. The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear throughout including scattered light staining on the front. Despite the fact that Buckner finished his twenty-two-year career with a lifetime batting average of .289, 2,715 hits, and 1,208 RBI, he will always be remembered for his historic error in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series. While his numbers the following year with the Red Sox were once again solid, the enduring memory of that play probably weighed heavily in the club’s decision to trade him to the Angels in midseason of 1987. Buckner appeared in fifty-seven games with the Angels that year, batting .306 with three home runs and thirty-two RBI. Ironically, he eventually finished his career with the Red Sox in 1990. Barry was friends with Bill Buckner and received this jersey directly from him. Among the other items Barry obtained from Buckner were the original cleats and glove he was wearing at the time of his famous error. Those pieces were sold in 1999, but Barry always had a special fondness for Buckner and kept this jersey as a reminder of Buckner's place in history and Barry's friendship with him. This is a very interesting jersey that tells a story. Everyone knows that Buckner was with the Red Sox in 1986, and everyone knows what happened. The fact that this is a Bill Buckner California Angels jersey dating from 1987 is in itself symbolic of the unfairness to Buckner that his impressive career was defined by so many only with reference to a single very unfortunate error. Graded A9 by MEARS (base grade of 10, minus 1 point for the light staining). From the Barry Halper Collection. LOAs from Dave Bushing & Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA.
