I know this is really OT, but how did the Padres ever get the nickname "Friars"? I'd like to know.

I went to the Friar Fest today also and went through all the game used equipment. If there was anything on Ron Gant, I did not see it. There were a few hundred caps, and they are not identified other than numbers, so it is really challenging to figure out who may have worn a particular cap. They seemed to know which grouping of caps were from 2007 only. There were also about 100 pair of pants, and I only found 1 pair with a name embroidered. All others just had numbers and no years, so again challenging to identify. I suppose something from Gant may have been included in these caps and pants, although the pants looked like more recent pants. Prices were affordable.

I am not going back on Sunday.

To all: looking for a Mike Pagliarulo game used Padres home or road jersey from 1989 or 1990, the only 2 seasons he played there if anyone goes and sees one, pick it up as I will take it, or email me the price if you can, I appreciate it.Thanks alot, Jody

                Hi L.A. --

The nickname "Friars" is a take off of the name Padres. The Padres (Spanish for Fathers) were originally named in 1936 (Pacific Coast League) as a reference to the Spanish missionaries and priests that are historically linked to southern California. Although religiously inaccurate (there are distinct differences between Priests, Friars, Monks, and Brothers), the names Padres and Friars have become pretty interchangable in San Diego. Other local nicknames for the team include Pads, Fathers, and (in the bleachers) The Dads.

There were no Pagliarulo jerseys on Saturday unless they were overlooked somehow.

There's quite a few teams that have commonly accepted "alternate" nicknames like that too. The Senators were also called the Nats or Nationals (like now). I can also think of the Twins being called the Twinkies, the Mariners called the M's, the Orioles called the O's and of course the Athletics are more well known as the A's. Any others?

Received the McGriff jersey today, it is better than described, jersey shows tremendous wear. RC shipped the jersey very quickly and was great to deal with. Thanks

All have sold but the 2007 Milton Bradley Road. It is available for $150.00 postpaid.

Thanks to all who purchased from me this past week!

I personally did not see any Ron Gant or Mike Pagliarulo jerseys at the Friarfest. I saw very few, three to four, camouflage and was able to pick up a 2005 Doug Mirabelli which I am keeping. According to Sandy Alderson, the Padres are trying to make the Camo style one the teams regular alternate jerseys. We’ll see.

The majority of the late 80's jerseys were gone on Sunday, as well as, the '90 style. A lot of lucky people walked away with real nice items. Unfortunately, I only have two arms.
