    1960's Durene Detroit Lions Jersey

For sale I have a 1960's Durene Detroit Lions jersey. I am not sure who wore this number as I am not a big Lions fan, but after confirming the tagging and style with other auction houses it is definatly the real deal. It is size 42 made by Sandknit at Griswold sporting goods company. I am not posting a price, because I am unsure of the value. I am listining to offers, and also if anyone has any further knowledge on this, I would love to know.

I apologize for not posting a price. I was basically trying to get an idea of the value from others. I guess I should have posted it in a different category. Any help on this jersey would be appreciated (Which player, value, etc..)

Re: 1960's Durene Detroit Lions Jersey

Going completely off memory, Pat Studstill wore #25 in the 1960s until he was traded to the Rams around 1968, and I believe that Earl McCullough may have worn #25 at some point after that (or Earl may have been #22). I will research this evening to see if anyone else wore #25 after Studstill and give you a more definite answer regarding McCullough's number(s).

Based on the font of the #5 and the tagging, I am guessing that it is a late 1960s jersey. The Lions would recycle jerseys, so look closely at the back and see if there is signs of a nameplate having been removed (if recycled for use in 1970 or later) and if the number on the back has been slightly lowered (this was done to accommodate 1960s jersey that were recycled for namepalte use in 1970).

For what it's worth, I made a bulk buy from the Lions back in 1999 that included close to 100 Lions durene jerseys from the late 1960s through 1974. My prices ranged from $250 to $450 based on the jersey color and whether it was a long-sleeve jersey. Most of those jerseys had the name-on-back (Lions started using NOBs in 1970).

        Hope this information is useful.

Thanks for your help. Just did some research as well, and I belive you are correct in the jersey belonging to Pat Studsill. Here is a picture I found

Also, there does not appear to be any removal of a nameplate

After further examining the photo, with the number font, size, and the sleeve style all being correct, I would definatly say this jersey belonged to Pat Studtsill. I am asking $750 shipped for it. I realize Mark indicated a $250-$450 value on Lions durenes from this era, however Studsill was a Pro-Bowl Punter/Receiver therefore I belive it to hold greater value.

Nice jersey! I would say $750+ value. This jersey is before nameplates were used. Did you buy this on eBay after the seller agreed to end early?

Re: 1960's Durene Detroit Lions Jersey

My thought is that it is a leap of faith to say that the jersey was "definitely" worn by Pat Studstill without more solid evidence or provenance. Earl McCullouch (above photo) wore #25 in the late-1960s after Studstill left the Lions, so the jersey could be McCullouch's (or it could have been worn by both if it was "recycled" and used over several seasons). Keep in mind that nameplates were not added to jerseys of NFC teams until 1970. To be fair, it is more proper to say that this jersey was "most likely" worn by either Pat Studstill or Earl McCullouch.

McCullouch, who played collegiately at Southern Cal, was certainly no slouch. He was the 1968 NFL Rookie-of-the Year after being selected by Detroit in the first round of the 1968 NFL Draft. For those of us who were around at the time, it is worth recalling that McCullouch was also a world-class track star at USC who had a good shot at making the 1968 Olympic team had he not opted for the NFL.

McCullouch was honored for his feats by being inducted into the USC Hall-of-Fame this past year. To some USC fans and collectors, this jersey would easily garner more than a grand.

I am interested to know if anyone made a firm offer at the price listed in post #7 of $750.

                              Hi Mark
To awnser your question, Yes, I actually had many firm offers of $750 for the jersey, that is why I decided to post it on E-Bay with Buy It Now/Best Offer. When I originally posted the price, I then left my computer for a few hours and when I returned I had multiple buyers saying they would take it. How do you decide who to sell to??
