1999 Jeff Bagwell Astros game used road grey Victory jersey!

I have a 1999 Jeff Bagwell Game Used Houston Astros road grey Victory jersey (Sixe 48) available for sale. The jersey comes with a Grey Flannel Letter of Authenticity with photos of the jersey itself.

One item to point out is that the jersey does show some extensive laundry damage. There are several bleach marks on the front and backside of the jersey, which appear to be attempts to clean off possibly pine tar and dirt stains. There is also some staining around the patches sewn on the jersey as well. I tried to include as many photos as possible so you can see for yourself.

The back of the jersey actually isn't as bad as the front, with only a couple of noticeable bleach marks. The 'Bagwell' nametape and number '5' on the back appear to be in fairly good condition with some slight fraying and scratches, which are consistent with normal game use. They also display noticeable puckering, which is common with jerseys that have ben laundered a lot. The nametape is also a little darker than the rest of the jersey, which I actually think adds a little character to the piece! This jersey actually wouldn't look too bad if it were framed showing the back of it, and would look even better with a bold silver autograph on the number '5.'

There are also a few small frayed areas on the jersey, which apear to have been repaired on the inside by the Astros clubhouse. This is pretty common with Astros gamers. From talking with Chris Boyd at Houston Sports Investments, it appears that Bagwell didn't go through many jerseys in the late 90s. So, it is possible that this jersey was worn extensively during the 1999 season. The fraying of the patches and the inside repair work are strong evidence that this jersey saw a lot of action.

I am asking for $700 for this item. If it weren't for the laundry damage, this could easily be a $1,500 piece. But, I think $700 is reasonable considering the game use , and the fact that it could still display well if framed showing the backside of the jersey. Any reasonable offer will be considered, though. Please e-mail me at: loumud@yahoo.com with any interest, or if you would like more photos of the item.

    Thanks!

I saw this jersey in person in January, and it is a nice piece at a great price! Too bad for the laundry stains. The repaired spots were odd. They were in odd locations, but obviously team repaired.

Bagwell and Biggio both went against from norm from 1995 to 1999 and wore Victory jerseys for the Home White and Road Grey styles. The black/navy alternates were made by Russell.

This is only 1 of 3 Victory jerseys I have ever seen of Bagwell. I have a 1999 Road and I know a collector with a 1997 Home. Bagwell told me personally at a signing that he had two of each style made (4 total per year) from 1995 to 1999. That is only 20 jerseys! He commented he still had most of them and only gave them as gifts to clubhouse personnel and family.

Good Luck every finding another one of these!

What was the reason for Bagwell and Biggio wearing different jerseys from the rest of the team? Is this a common practice?

That is a great jersey, and it would still display well if only the back were shown. Best of luck selling this one!

        Frik,

Bagwell and Biggio wore these jerseys for a couple of reasons - control of the jerseys and comfort. In 1994, the Astros sold the entire stock of team jerseys to Hartel sports. Players were not given the opportunity to even buy or keep one style of jersey. If a 1994 Astros jersey does not have a Hartel letter or originate from Hartel, it wasn't issued by the team. Every Biggio and Bagwell jersey was sold through Hartel. At the time, the prices were record highs for players! Bagwell's were $2500 and Biggios were either $1500 or $1800. Insane prices at a time when game worn jerseys were not as widely sought after as they are today. So, all this being said, Biggio and Bagwell (and reports of Caminiti, even though I have never seen proof of this) decided to buy their own jerseys starting in 1995. They choose Victory out of Los Angeles. However, they did continue to wear Majestic BP jerseys and Russell Sunday/Holiday Alternate jerseys. I have seen photos of Biggio and Bagwell from 1995 to 1999 in Home white and Road greys, but it was likely for very few games. I do own a Biggio Home and Bagwell Road victory jerseys and pants, and they are much heavier material. I have attached some photos of Biggio and Bagwell from 1995 to 1999. Note that the Russell sleeve emblem is missing from their jerseys.
