1994 Derek Jeter Game Used Signed Columbus Clippers Bat - Gai Authenticated

HOOSIER BAT COMPANY LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY: Per your email dated 28 May 2004, you have requested information in regards to a Hoosier Original HB 215 “THE DREAM” Black Bat with the number 3 on the knob used by Derek Jeter of the 1994 Columbus Clippers.
My husband, David, and I own Hoosier Bat Co. We did not sell any bats directly to Derek Jeter. We did, however, sell bats to the Columbus Clippers. In 1994, we did ship bats to Columbus and Derek was on the team at that time.
When major league players order bats, they are for them personally and it is a rule we have to put the name of the player on the bat. When minor league players order, we do it as a courtesy because the larger companies will not do it for them any more. This is the case when it is the specific player ordering and paying for the bat. Usually minor league teams order a quantity and then let the players pick out what they like to hit with. This was the case with the Columbus Clippers. It was a bulk order that went to the team as a whole. Therefore, no names of individuals were put on them.
Thank you for contacting us and sending us the pictures! If your travels ever bring you to this area, please stop in and see us. My husband went to Admiral Farragut Naval Academy in Toms River, NJ. Since you have been in the Navy for 25 years, I bet you have heard of that.
Congratulations on your 25 years and enjoy your bat.

Yes, you are correct. Jeter wore #13 with the Columbus Clippers in 1994 and 1995. But he wore #2 in 1998 when he went back to Columbus for a few games during rehab. That is why his 1998 signature and #2 (which he wore for those few games with Columbus and the Yankees in 1998) are written on the knob in silver sharpie. The bat is game used from 1994 with Columbus, but Jeter didn't sign it until 1998, during his rehab. Jeter would not inscribe the bat that way if it wasn't true. Probably signed in for someone in the Columbus Clippers organization in 1998 or someone he gave the bat to while with Columbus in 1994. I'm getting additional authentication for the bat. 3arod13

Re: 1994 Derek Jeter Game Used Signed Columbus Clippers Bat - Gai Authenticated

the hoosier letter simply states that the company provided bats to the clippers in 1994 and that they didn't put names on minor league bats. i'm unsure if this qualifies as a "letter of authenticity" for this particular bat. it doesn't address anything about this particular bat at all. hoosier doesn't even state what models they provided to the clippers in 1994. how does hoosier saying "we shipped many bats without player names to the clippers in 1994" indicate they feel this particular bat was used by derek jeter in 1994 while at columbus?

anyway, there are a couple of things i'm curious about. apparently the story is that jeter signed the bat in 1998. the bat stuck around the columbus office for 4 yrs? knob numbers are written to help in locating and organizing on the bat rack. why write a number on the knob of a bat 4 yrs after you last used it?

i'm also curious about something from a bat authentication perspective. perhaps some of our bat experts can provide some insight here. i don't know sean drinkwater but i'm curious how he was able to attribute this bat to jeter? the writing on the knob, as we know, is from post-1994. is it solely from the inscription? mike, jim, marcus? how would you authenticate this bat?

from the little that i know about bats, i understand that length, weight, and model are of paramount importance. is there any evidence whatsoever that jeter used 33", 28 oz, Hoosier HB215 black bats while with the Clippers? i'd very much like to hear from the bat experts here about drinkwater's conclusions and also what conclusions they would come to regarding this bat.

          thanks in advance,

          rudy.

THIS BAT IS NOT FOR SALE AT THIS TIME! HOWEVER, COMMENTS, OPINIONS, AND RECOMMMENDATIONs ARE ENCOURAGED AS I AM VIGORIOUSLY RESEARCHING INFORMATION ABOUT THIS BAT!

Kingjammy24, great questions! If you read my comments, they were more addressing (guessing) or trying to explain how possibly the #2 and post 1994 signature could be on a 1994 game used bat. When the bat was purchased, I was told that the bat was game used by Derek Jeter in 1994 and later signed by Derek Jeter. I have been researching this bat ever since. Since receiving this bat, I received the letter from Hoosier Bat Company and had the bat authenticated by GAI. Still, not enough.

Unfortunately, in today's hobby, players are signing early/older bats today. Like this bonds gamer from 1985, yet bonds signed it in 2004.

It's not out of the question that this is a Derek Jeter 1994 game used clippers bat and that he signed it later. I just need to prove this, and am working hard at doing this.

Anyway, I have been reseraching this bat for sometime. I also questioned how the #2 could be on the bat (when Jeter wore #13 with Columbus), with a post 1994 signature, if it was game used in 1994. It is possible that Jeter may have wrote #2 on it in 1994, as he ended using this number as a Yankee. It is possible that he gave someone this bat within the Columbus Clippers organization or a friend back in 1994, and then was asked later to sign it. There could be many reasons to explain this. Only Derek Jeter has the answer. However, without question, I do know the signature is 100% authentic! I have more than 400 autographed items from Derek Jeter from 1992 to present.

As we all know, unless we are there when it is used or signed, how does anyone know it's authentic. I have sent many items to PSA for authentication. Signatures that I personnaly obtained, yet the came back not authentic. It is there opinion, and their opinion only.

Thank you, and everyone else, who have provided comments about the bat, and even tried to give me reasons/explanations on how this bat could be authentic. I will not sell this bat until I have solid authentication for this bat.

Please keep the comments coming. Many thanks! 3Arod13

                Chris,

Although I am confident that this bat and signature are 100% authentic, and it has been authenticated by a reputable authentication service GAI, I feel I have every right to sell this bat. However, as long as this bat will continually be questionable to collectors, I have ended the auction and will pursue further additional information/authentication.

I have written to the Yankees on numerous occasions, with negative results. Don't know anyone who knows Derek Jeter. Can't write to Derek Jeter (mail is screened). What more can a person do. Any thoughts!

I believe it will take Derek Jeter to look at this bat and personally provide a letter that the bat is authentic. Does anyone in this forum personally know Derek Jeter (lol).

When I purchased the bat, I also question: 94 Derek Jeter gamer with a post (96-98) signature, with #2 written on the knob, but he wore #13 with the Clippers. But after researching this bat as much as possible, is it possible he signed this bat for someone in 1998, when he was rehabbing with the Clippers? Is it possible he signed this bat in his early years with the Yankees, just following his Clipper days? Impossible...no! Possible...Yes! Could this explain the above...sure! However, only Derek Jeter would know.

I want to say that since coming across this website recently, I'm amazed and appreciative of the knowledge and guidance this forum provides. Most of all, all the efforts from everyone trying to keep this hobby safe. Reading some of the horror stories in this forum, sure scares me even more about this hobby. Who can you trust? Even players are signing there stuff as game used, when it's not.

Yes, I'm not happy that I'm being beat down about my Jeter bat, however, I do realize it is a must in order to protect and keep our hobby safe.

If anyone has any thoughts on what else I can do to get assistance in researching this bat and even possibly getting someone who knows Jeter to look at this bat, that would be very appreciated.

Thanks for keeping our hobby safe!

                All my best, 3arod13

As many of you recall, I listed for sale my 1994 Derek Jeter Game Used Signed Columbus Clippers bat. As warranted, many of you questioned if this bat was authentic, and if so, why as #2 written on the knob vice #13, which he wore with Columbus.

Well, after months of research and waiting, here are the results! Confirmed 100% authetic by Derek Jeter. As stated in the letter, he can't recall why is #2 is on the know of the bat vice his #13, but also stated there are a variety of reaons for the #2 and he does not wish to conjecture the reason.

There is no longer any doubt of the authenticity of this bat.

I do want to thank GUU for the help and knowledge shared in this forum. Not only did you all help me with this bat, but the errors made in my LOA's for my two Arod gamers.

If you notice on the FEDEX printout, in the upper right has corner: WELLS/GMS.

WELLS: Ms. Wells is Mr. Steinbrenner's Secretary.
                    GMS: George Michael Steinbrenner
