Brewers '92 Home Jerseys With Names?

    Forum Readers-

A fellow Forum reader asked my opinion about 1992 home Brewers jerseys. He indicated that 1992 homes were void of names on back, however, the roads had names on back. He checked baseball cards and photos, and said all 1992's showing home jerseys appear to void of NOB's. Grey Fannel currently is offering a 1992 home Yount with name on back. Can a Brewers expert or other expereinced Forum reader please comment? The offering from the GF site is below:

(2550) 1992 Robin Yount Milwaukee Brewers Game-Used & Autographed Home Jersey
On the left front tail is the "RUSSELL" manufacturers tag with wash instructions and jersey size "44". Inside the rear neck is a white embroidered tag with "YOUNT 1992". Player number "19" appears on the front and back. Player name "YOUNT" appears on the back. All numbers and letters are done in blue on yellow tackle twill. There is an autograph on the back done in blue marker rating a 5-6 due to fading. Jersey shows game-use and is backed by our JSA guarantee.

1992 home jerseys - no names on back.
1993 home jerseys - names on back.

in 1992, nobs were not used so the numbers on the back were placed higher than they were in 1993 when nobs were used. on this jersey, the back numbers are placed low enough for a nob to fit. so from the initial application of the back numbers, the person assumed a 1993 style. yet the tagging says "yount 1992". (this also indicates that it wasn't tagged as a spare. hence, you can't make the argument that it was made in 1992, and then updated and worn in 1993. if that would've been the case, then the back numbers would've been too high for a nob to fit.) whoever put the back numbers on did so with the clear intent that they had to accomodate a nob as well. this intent couldn't have been known in 1992.

the only scenario that i can think of is that it was a proper 1992 yount jersey that was re-used in 1993 (again by yount) by having the original numbers removed, having the nob done up locally, and then having the numbers placed back on in a lower position to accomodate the new nob. this would mean that the back would have clear evidence of alterations; tons of ghost stitching, especially given that a nameplate wasn't used in 1992 or 1993. i find this explanation hard to believe.

so then what IS this jersey?! realistically, there's only one conclusion.

i'll end off by saying that the "yount 1992" tag may be atypical. a gentleman recently sold off a very nice, lifetime brewers collection on ebay. here is his 1992 mike fetters. note the tagging syntax and the relatively high placement of the back numbers.

      Rudy-

Great point about the collar tag. The tag on the Grey Flannel jersey in question is the first time I have ever seen this paper-like tag with black screened info on a 1992 Brewers. The example you show is the style I have seen on EVERY 1992 Brewers-plastic type screened lettering with full info.

Regardless of the issues raised, the shirt has been removed from the Grey Flannel web site.

reguarding the yount jersey. in the mid to late 1990s a card shop in town here[in milwaukee] had a couple hundred of these made up and were signed by robin yount. i believe the price was $199 . 1993 was the first year the brewers had name on the back on home jerseys not 1993 ,the dead give away was the paper style tag in the collar.brewers didnt use in 1992,also the stitching on the numbers is different then the real gamers. hope this helps. howard you helped me about 15 years ago on a phillies item.....thanks ....
