The upcoming Mastro auction has a lot (#1479) of five game-used bats that includes a signed Gary Carter, a signed Dale Murphy, an Andre Dawson, a Tim McCarver and a Ted Simmons.
I want the Simmons bat (which is probably from 1970, not 1968 as advertised, per his shipping records), but don't want to have to purchase the entire lot. So...
Is there anybody out there who would like to join forces with me to purchase this lot? Here's what I'm thinking. If you want one or more of the bats (excluding Simmons, of course), let me know the most you'd pay. Then, I'll take the highest "bids" on each bat, add them up (along with my top bid for Simmons) and use that as the bid limit (taking the 20% hammer fee into account).
If we won the lot, we'd each get the bats we want. And if we got the lot for less than our max, I'd just pro-rate the amounts. For example, if we got the lot for half our max bid and you offered $300 for Dawson, you'd get the Dawson for $150.
I figure this is an odd grouping of bats that, otherwise, probably will be bought and broken up by a dealer. I also figure there are other collectors out there who would like a Carter or a Murphy but wouldn't be interested in the whole lot. Anyone game? Let me know at birdbats@charter.net.
