1984 U.S.A. Olympics Uniform -- Coach Rod Dedeaux

I’ve decided to sell one of my favorite pieces, a 1984 Team USA uniform worn by the legendary coach, Rod Dedeaux. Here is more information about Coach Dedeaux: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rod_Dedeaux

The jersey is a home white pullover, one of four styles worn by the 1984 U.S. Olympic baseball team (along with a white button up, a blue pullover and a red pullover). It’s a size 46 Rawlings that shows light use. A “46” is written in pencil above the Rawlings tag. There are a couple dirt stains on the back, most noticeably between the digits. There are no sleeve patches. Many jerseys from that era have “USA Baseball” and “GE” patches on the sleeves, but those could be worn only during the pre-Olympic tournament. No advertising was allowed on jerseys worn in the 1984 Olympic Games.

The pants are Rawlings size 36 with reinforced knees. They appear to be new and probably were not worn by Dedeaux with the jersey. The red/white/blue cap (identical to those worn by players featured in the 1985 Topps set) is made by Exace and is a fitted 7 1/8. Like the pants, it appears to be new.

I acquired this uniform at a charity auction benefiting the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in April 2005. It was donated by Dr. Robert E. “Ish” Smith, the Southern Illinois Area Director of the FCA and the man chiefly credited for getting baseball into the Olympic Games. Dr. Smith was president of the International Baseball Association from 1980-93; president of the U.S. Baseball Federation from 1977-90; and a member of the U.S. Olympic Committee executive board from 1979-89. Here is more information about Dr. Smith: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Smith_(baseball)

Dr. Smith provided a handwritten letter of authenticity with the uniform. It says: This is to authenticate the USA uniform from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. I brought these personally from the Games in 1984 where I ran the baseball games. This was from the set worn by Coach Rod Dedeaux. Robert E. “Ish” Smith

The United States team took the silver in the 1984 games, losing to Japan in the championship. The team featured several future MLB stars, including Mark McGwire, Will Clark, Barry Larkin, Cory Snyder, B.J. Surhoff and more.

As a bonus, I’ll also throw in a 5x7 1984 team photo that’s signed by Will Clark and comes with an LOA from Dr. Smith.

Asking $950 for everything, includes shipping. Please write me at birdbats@charter.net if you have any questions. Thanks!
