Sewn In vs Iron on Patches

Here is a random question. Do any of you know when people switched from sewn on patches on baseball jerseys to iron on. Was it in the 40's? 50's? I have a jersey that has no evidence of patch removal but otherwise matches photos of an actual player wearing the exact jersey. Only theory is iron on patch. Anyone have any facts???

They never had iron on patches. They were always sewn on.

Hmmm. I am not sure that this is quite right either. Why wouldn't they use iron on patches? We are going to do scientific research to see if there is remnant of adhesive on this jersey. We will see if there is. I have learned in 10 years of research on the older jersey that "never" is a tricky word!!! Thank you for the answer!
