Garage Sale Score!!!!

Woke up early this morning to find a message in my voicemail from a friend who told me about a garage sale with baseball stuff....It was amazingly only three blocks from my house so I headed over and found a garage full of old baseball stuff and Husker football memorabilia....There was an old box full of old splitfinger gloves but the prices were too high...I may go back and get a better look later to see if there are any rare gloves as I was in a bit of a hurry...about 50-60 bats...mostly from the 1960's (Maris, Mantle, Kaline, et cetera) the prices were still too high. I did manage to pick up the stuff in the photos here though at reasonable (IMO) prices....all of the baseballs were $2 each. There are two very old blue/red stitched balls, a Three I League Rawlings which I suspect came from an old Lincoln Chiefs game in the late 50's, a Reach baseball C1950, and a bunch of Worth "Specials". The two books are pretty collectible -especially the Putnam Senators book by Shirley Povich...the Go Go Sox book I have never seen before. Also got the 1934 Goudey Wax Wrapper with Lou Gehrig on it for $20. The pennant I got for $10 is special to me as it's from my alma mater. This guy had tons of stuff from yearbooks to autographed photos, but his prices were at least ebay comparable on most of it...I grabbed what I thought to be the bargains.

Slidekellyslide I am curious looking at the baseballs some seem to be in pretty bad condition do those hold any value? and did you pick these up for value purposes or just to add to your collection?

I am just curious in case i come across anything like that should i grab it or not.

Those balls are killer. If they aren't torn or badly chapped, they are good. Nice patina on them. Where the bats 125s branded or stamped? If 34" or longer, model 125, branded, or have markings other than inch marks on the end, pick up the Mantle and Maris bats if under $100.

Also ask him to see the private stash. He may have some golden oldies in the house.

You should always pick up multi-color stitched baseballs in any condition as they seem to do very well on ebay...even in this condition I've seen them go for up to $50 or more. The Three I League ball is pretty faded, but still very collectible to a guy like me that collects minor league items -the league folded in 1962 so the ball is at least 44+ years old. The Worth Specials are all smaller canvas type baseballs that I see every so often on ebay...prices can vary widely on these balls. All of them are well worth the $2 each I paid for them.

Most of the player model bats were 125's...I don't remember on the Mantle specifically, but the Maris was a Little Leaguer -although it was the largest Little League bat I think I've ever seen. The Carl Yastrzemski was marked CY4 or something like that on the knob. He had an unusual bat that was stamped "Zip Guard" -looked to be very old. I googled "Zip Guard" and it's a wood finish product...not sure how long it's been around, but the bat looks to be at least early 1900s.

Agreed on all counts. The multi color balls are always prized. What about the bats, tell me about the bats, i'm interested in the bats.....I liiiiiike bats

Going back later to get a better look at the bats and gloves. I did ask him about his stuff he's keeping and he says this is most of it....he is concentrating on cards and he needs to move the memorabilia because he's out of room. He said his prize posession is a Maris autographed baseball that he got in person. The guy used to play college baseball for the Huskers from 1971-74.

I think I did better on the books than I would have originally guessed....couldn't find either book in the complete ebay auction search, but I did find the Povich book on abebooks.com, the cheapest I could find with a dust jacket was $250. Apparently the Senators book is one of the scarcer books from the Putnam series. The Go Go Sox book I found on amazon for $80.
