Maybe it's stupid for me to worry about this: But with the rampant identity theft these days, I wonder if some players are nervous about putting out thousands of clear samples of their signatures for total strangers? Maybe that's a factor in today's scribbled signings? Lew Burdette sometimes signed his name "Lou" and Tommy Lasorda often signs "Tom"; maybe for similar concerns?
That's supposed to be a recommendation to players from the MLBPA regarding why many active players won't sign unlined 3x5 index cards.
