No wonder I can't find any Nats stuff - too much competition!

    JDR3,

Nice pick up on the Nationals jersey.

Did you get that jersey at RFK, or at the team shop downtown? I remember seeing it, but can't remember which store.

    GO NATIONALS!!

I bought a '05 Nationals road jersey for $249 at the team store, not a bad price for a first year jersey.

    Tom,

That is incredible that you remember having owned this cap previously. Was it autographed in the same manner?

The collector I purchased it from is a local guy here in Richmond, Va. He said that he was a Giants fan and bought the cap through an ad in SCD around 1984 or '85. He's had it ever since. Can you recall anything else about the cap?

    Re: November Pick Ups

    Hi Jim,

Wow, this is a blast from the past. I owned this cap and probably sold it 25 years ago. I cannot recall where I got it from or who it went to. I went back to my old records just now and noted that it was a New Era cap and there was no size tag left in this cap, and I also had noted it was 1978-1980, so I would guess I picked it up in 1980 or 1981. My guess is that it was probably given or issued to #15 Mike Ivie as a new cap, never worn, and then used by #47 Dennis Littlejohn. I also doubt a player would use a cap that had already been worn, but I suppose stranger things happen.

The reason I let the cap go is that I was able to obtain a Mike Ivie Giants cap from the Padres visiting clubhouse kid after the 1981 season that he had kept. It is also a New Era cap, and unfortunately, it is also missing the size tag. I still have this cap in my collection.

I sometimes have wondered where certain things went that I may have let go over the years. Probably the most unique item (but not the most valuable, that probably goes to a great Roberto Clemente game used batting helmet) is a Jim Rice cracked bat that was corked. My Dad was a physician, and one night after hours he had the technician X-ray the two bats I had that I thought might be corked. The Bill Buckner from the early 1970's turned out to have nothing. However, one of the two Rice bat X-rays clearly shows the "tube" through the barrel where the bat was corked. I sold the bat with the X-rays about the same time as the Littlejohn cap. I still see the name of the collector/dealer who bought it, but have never asked if he still has this item. What I thought was so unique about the Rice bat is that if he was using these in games, he never got caught. I recall seeing a loaded Dan Ford bat from the Angels before he was caught, and wish I had picked it up. A local collector had offered me the cracked bat.

Here's my guess - Either Ivie wore the hat for the first part of the year and turned it in to get a newer looking one or....

Little john was called up in July. Perhaps they were scrambling to find him a hat to wear and Ivie let him borrow this one. Its not unusual to reissue equipment. I plan to write to both and ask.

PS - Giants fans - the hat is available if anyone's interested.....I'm not going to put a price on it but I'll listen to best offers.

1978-80 San Francisco Giants game used alternate orange/black New Era hat.

Worn by catcher Dennis Littlejohn (and possibly worn prior to that by Mike Ivie)

I answered an ad here locally from a Giants fan who wanted to sell this. Hat is signed twice by Littlejohn. Scratched out number above the 47 is 15 (Ivie)

I do see that actually and it wouldn't be the first mistake I've ever made! But the mesh and the shoulder material match perfectly as well as the material-transition points so this jersey has to be something ND game-related. "1" font is identical, the shoulder "8"s close if not exact, front "8" does seem a bit different though. Maybe an earlier set or a practice jersey. From what I can tell 1986 was the only year Notre Dame had the huge fishnet mesh jerseys with the solid shoulders and both the number and the ND, so it will still look good on the wall! If anyone has more information to offer that would be great. Anyway, check out my "Bettis" ND lacrosse jersey! Just picked that one up as well, I think it's from 1990.

Not all were picked up in November but the one with the crack through the trademark was used in the playoffs and most likely the World Series. The tar/dirt is so built up that its created its own layer on the handles-you can't see the wood.

    Genius,

Look again at your SI cover jersey, particularly at the monograms on the arm. Now compare that to your jersey. Of note, look at the thickness of the monogram letters in your jersey vs the magazine cover, as well as the space between the monogram letters in your jersey (almost no visible jersey between the letters of the monogram) and the Brown jersey on the SI cover (jersey visible between the letters because they are skinny). The arms on that jersey are my concern. Also, I understand what you're saying about the champion patches, but champion affixed them to the jerseys really well - it wouldn't have been able to fall off without being ripped off.

Just my two cents and just trying to help - not trying to be a pain.

    Happy Thanksgiving.
