I would never want to own anything quite that morbid...unless the possibility of torturing the Unit with it existed.

what is the difference between the holy grail and the white whale?

just wondering if everyone list are items they know where it is located and are actively trying obtain it. i think thats different than an item that you have on your want list that you still havent located and don't know who the owner is.

i guess i just want to hear stories of struggle(s) of getting a hold of an item like the story of the original poster.

              Joel -

I'll agree with that analogy... although both are items with undisclosed locations...

I would say a Holy Grail is an item you want, but have no idea of the location or where to begin - after all King Arthur and his Knights never located the Grail...

On the other hand, a White Whale - named for Moby Dick as stated earlier - should be an item you want and you have a general idea of where to begin searching and ultimately the item will surface (no Moby Dick pun intended) as Ahab eventually did find the Great White Beast...

That said, I guess two of the three of mine are actually Holy Grail quests - The Holliday 'Slide' jersey and the Ryan 'Blood' jersey...

I actually obtained one of my White Whales last year a
after almost 20 years of waiting :

A bronze casting of Ryan's pitching hand w/ Auto ball made by Bronze Memories in 1989...

does it have anything to do with this?

Ryan Is Sued Over a Show of Hands (1992)

A Harris County couple has filed a lawsuit against Texas Rangers pitcher NOLAN RYAN charging that he breached a contract that gave their business the exclusive right to sell likenesses of his hands. The lawsuit, filed by Bronze Memories Inc., and its owners, ROY and BERNADETTE CHAMPIOMONT of Katy, Tex., names Ryan, MATT MEROLA and Mattgo Enterprises, as defendants.

The lawsuit alleges that the former Houston Astros pitcher signed a contract with Bronze Memories in June 1989, giving the bronze-art business the exclusive rights to manufacture and market bronze or other nonphotographic reproductions of the pitcher's hands, according to court records. I actually won it on an eBay auction and the seller included the original bill of sale from Bronze memories.

Now I'm not familiar with the law suit you mentioned but I did do some research after it came in and found this site:

Where they still sell the hands. Now, my question comes up - especially with the law suit - that these were supposed to be a Limited Edition and if memory serves in 1990 sometime they said the print run was Sold Out and the molds had been destroyed... but here they are - Bronze Memories - still selling them. Their site now claims that as of 4/28/97 a total of 934 castings had been made and 140 were still available.

I still can't complain though - Style 'A' like mine is still $1,200 on their website... I picked it up for just over $400 including shipping!!!

Let me start off by saying that there are some awsome items in here. Great variety! Good job on the thread.

A White Whale for me would be a Bob Golic Gamer. Now, before you say 'who?' take a look at the pics. You'll most likely remember him from his acting career. Growing up on this show, a Golic Gamer would be a rare accomplishment.

                            Sorry I missed this thread...

I actually have 2 items. First is a matched pair of Vince Coleman spikes from 1987-1989. These would have to have proof beyond belief...and signed by Vince. I got offerered a pair 10 years ago that I knew were real, and I passed because they were $300. I have not seen a pair since.

Any Ray Lankford All-Star used stuff. I'd even take a pair of documented batting gloves. He was only there once, and as Lankford extrodiannaire DonTheLegend will tell you...that stuff is scarce. So scarce, it's probably on his walls.

The bat Steve Finley used to hit the grand slam that won the NL West title for the Dodgers in 2004. I've seen the potential jersey on eBay but I don't have room for the jersey and the bat seems a little more significant to me. Not to mention it's easier to photomatch. Does anyone know where this thing is at? I'd love to make a run at it if it ever showed itself at an auction.

Josh Hamilton's HR Derby bat from last year. Great story behind it.
