I hear what you're saying about all those factors and you're correct. But you also have to justify the money we all spend on this stuff to ourselves, and ultimately, our families. While I love Giambi as much as you love Straw,I just can't justify paying more for one of his bats than I did for my Mattingly or Thome bats-lets not forget, even if he never touched the juice,he's not a HOF'er...just one of the better power hitters of his day.Actually,I was prepared to spend $400,but,oh well..
At least they weren't as bad as one of his NYY Mother's Day bats from a couple years ago that went for-get this-$2200!!

    Joe,

Can you PM me or email me at c_u_l_1@yahoo.com? It's unrelated; I just don't have your email and your PMs are turned off.

That Kinsler bat is awesome, I love how they put his team as the Reds on the bat. Also there were some players never used a pink bat, like Andy LaRoche, he had his black bat the whole game.

I completely understand what your saying but you also keep brining in to the point "the player". It's not the player that what is making this bat sell or shall I say the player "just" making the bat sell. It is the rarity of the bat.

Example - some no name last minute call up in the late 20's on the Yankees came up for just a few games and was sent back down because he sucked, never to reutrn back to the Majors again.
You may say well I am not paying a lot of money for that bat - he was a nobody, didn't even do anything. But yet you may get guys to spend huge numbers for a game used bat of his because it is so rare to find any of them out there since he didn't spend much time on the Team.

Another comparison the "76 logo Louisville Slugger bats" Those sell for a premium because of the rarity of just the logo, even if it is used by a complete nobody.

It boils down to a supply and demand and then of course the player himself his "popularity" adds to the premium

But again I do understand where your coming from and what your budget will allow.

I think you're right. I want to say he may have used a Crisp bat too, but Im not sure.

The commentators for that game also commented that Callaspo gave one of his bats to Olivo. Just for one at bat? Perhaps.

But Ive seen Olivo bats with that type of taped handle.

I totally agree... The only way both Callaspo bats could show that much use was if one was used in BP or he used it on another day... I was coming to the same conclusion you were.

Plus if you go to the gallery on the game recap, I cant figure out how to link it right, Callaspo also used a regular two tone bat that game... Maybe his pinks were only BP used...

to confuse matters. Here is Olivo using a pink bat, that does not look like an Old Hickory... Looks like either the Guillen or Crisp bat, based on the stripe and the natural handle, or possibly a bat thats not been put up for auction.

AND YET A DIFFERENT BAT... Possibly a Callaspo bat...

Callaspo did use one at least one pink bat.. It might be close to a match with the untaped handle.

So, in conclusion, I agree exactly that MLB has made errors or misstatements in the past, and they tend to basically go with the name on the barrel. And seldom seem to differentiate between BP use, game use, and game issue.

I guess the point Im trying to make is just because MLB says a bat is such-n-such, doesnt necessary mean that thats what it is. Its quite evident that Callaspo didnt use both of these bats. And I guess you may want to double check any of these before purchasing. It wouldnt hurt. Just throwing it out there.

One thing I have a problem with. If you look at some of the bats listed, they have pics of two different bats shown for the same auction. Example the Kapler, Navarro and Aybar bats. One pic shows a bat with use the other shows a clean bat (no use).

So how do you know for sure you will get the bat with use? You don't!

Also, I only see on MLB.com , that the "Net Proceeds go to charity".....

    Re: MLB Pink Bats

Great points... And I'd like to add, that it is very easy for people to find photo matches, because it is from a single game. And that always helps people feel comfortable paying a premium.

I also believe that prices are a little higher, because in some cases players have been known to re-acquire their bats at any cost to give to their moms. Those higher than normal market prices boost the entire market.

I totally agree though, its all about the low supply.

I just paid 310 for the Billy Butler bat. I have 5-6 Butler bats before this one and never paid more than 150. So, yes, charity, rarity, and novelty all drove my decision to pay double/triple the usual rate. Plus on this auction, rather than stating net proceeds, they stated 90% of auction value, which I feel means a large chunk is definitely going to charity.

    Re: MLB Pink Bats

Put the Charity aside and the Players realistic numbers aside..........

I think some of you may be missing what drives these bats up in bidding

    1) The rarity of the bat - obviously at most there could be up to 4 bats used. But usually more like 1 or 2 are used.
Now thats for one game, through out the whole season. Which makes it a very rare bat.

    2) The nolvety that it is a Pink bat. I mean of all colors of bats that are used in a game for MLB these bats are pink!! So people love the nolvety to own a rare Pink bat.

    3) MLB Auctions people always tend to spend more money on MLB because they feel a little bit more comfortable knowing the item for sure or close to fure as you can get that the item is real as opposed to ebay or other auction places.

    4) As far as the lower end players showing little to no interest in bidding. I think the novelty is starting to wear off, since they been doing this auction now for a couple of years, people are starting to lose interest so the lower names are going to start getting passed by. People will just say oh well I'll wait to next year to see what they have "knowing this is going to be an every year thing"

When the first bats came out it was huge because it was new everyone wanted one - there was no such thing as getting a lower end player bat for cheap.
I had to wait till the second year to get mine to land a decent player at a decent price. Not even a player I wanted I just picked it up because I wanted one in my collection and he actually made some hits with it.
I believe he went 3/4 with an RBI.

So the prices that are driven up are not soley because of it being a good cause or because the player this season is doing well. But more for the bat itself.

Jason Giamibi who is doing nothing this year is still a fan favorite and will still recieve attention for his items.

    Joe,

I was bidding on the Giambi bats. Couldnt believe how high the bidding got. The one that went fro 700 had a ton of use. The bats are for a great cause, I try to pick one up every year.

People love these bats. Great for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer charity and it seems every year a few bats hit gigantic numbers but this is the first year that some of the bats at $250 from lesser players are getting little or no interest which I would think is the economy.

I really want that Adam Dunn bat because of the historical significance, but I won't chase crazy money on it.

My hope in the future is baby blue bats on Father's Day for Prostate cancer and a Memorial day patriotic bat as these can raise serious money for the charities and it brings more people to the ballparks.
