Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????

When I first read your post I started laughing when you mentioned Kurt Suzuki. As an example I could mention 2 of my friend who have large collections. (Not game used)

One has a huge collection of Hot Wheels & diecast cars. He had a room which displayed a greater majority of his collection. Four years ago he & his wife had a daughter so he had to pack everything away to make room for her.

A second friend had a huge collection of sports cards & regular sports memorabilia. He recently found a girlfriend so he had to pack his stuff away to make room for her. She wasn't thrilled about sleeping in his apartment with barely enough room to walk around.

So there are just 2 reasons that I know personally of why things need to be stored. Both of my friend now have a small place in their house/apartment where they display their collection which the rotate from time to time.

As for me I am very fortunate to have an understanding wife who let me remodel a storage room for my "Kurt Suzuki" collection. Unfortunately as my Suzuki collection grows I find myself having to store away other parts of my collection. I have a room just for my Joe Montana collection. That will be be stored away so that I can have just my Suzuki collection in it.

Here's what my room currently looks like with my Suzuki collection mixed in with my other memorabilia. I hope to have it moved into a room of it's own by the holidays.

Currently I have 105 University of Hawaii alumni jerseys in my collection along with cleats, gloves, helmets, and footballs. I am almost finished working on my display room which extends into the hallway. With the current setup, I have 20 jerseys on display which means 85 in storage. Does that mean I will stop collecting? Of course the answer is no. I have multiple jerseys belonging to single players but they are different styles or teams. I also may use my excess inventory to trade with other collectors. I can also rotate the jerseys on display for a different look.

When you share a feeling in an overzealous, all-encompassing display of supreme power, like stating that people who place their stuff in storage are disrespectful to other collectors, you have taken on a liberal mindset.

It's kind of like telling the American public they will all buy health insurance whether they want it or not...and in doing so, will pay for people who can't afford it or don't want to work for it. And if you don't do as I say, I will make you pay a fine that grows exponentially from year to year. That's socialism. That's anti-American.

And you wonder why a lot of us are a bit on edge these days? The day that mindset takes over in our hobby, I'll be the first to exit stage left.

I don't really get into politics talk because that leads to years of conversation and the fact that the USA is going downhill is an understatement. Our rights go out the door left and right.

Ill have to go back and re read what I typed but I wasn't meaning to say it is disrespectful I was saying if I DID that I WOULD feel disrespectful, Im not trying to tell anyone how to be or what to do with their items was just a question to get a feel of what others thought.

I have a best friend that lives off those people so that's why I asked, he goes weekend by weekend and heads off to storage unit auctions. They could be auctioned from non payment, death, or other situations but some of these units have amazing items in them that people one just don't care about or have forgot about. And when it comes to game used items I would be worried about the items getting stolen one and two I would want to use a climate controlled facility which I imagine costs a pretty penny. Some of these great items that are resurfacing from the past were in storage units and are in horrible shape due to lack of care.

To me its like watching that pickers show from the guys from Iowa they go to these houses and these pickers have everything known to man and a lot of the stuff is ruined or at least damaged. You pull up to a house and there's a grumpy old man that has everything under the sun and does nothing with the items but let them get ruined and doesn't want to sell them. Yes its America you can do what you want but I don't understand the concept or logic behind it.

Why have GUU if no one cares about others collections?
So because I won't sell you an item in storage I'm not respectful, courteous, caring or generous?

I see zero correlation between not selling an item in storage and being respectful, courteous, caring and generous.

I ask myself questions all the time about why people do or don't do the things they do and it always comes back to this; because that's what they decided to do or not do.

    Then I move on.

I was just going to take them to the local army/navy surplus and see if they want to buy some of it and if not take the rest besides the weapons to the rescue mission or list a few sleeping bags on ebay, there has to be a camper or two out there that might be able to help me out.

Do you own a safe? If so, do you have anything in it? That's "storage". So are we to say "Shame on YOU! Take it out and sell it to someone NOW!"? Someone could actually argue displaying items in your own house is keeping them in storage. After all, it's locked up away from everyone else, right?

Totally off topic and reading way to much into detail of the question at hand. I was asking a question. This was more directed to those that continue to collect and place items in storage units. Im not talking about closets in a house or a side room in your house with your excess collection that is readily accessible, Im talking about collectors that keep compiling items in "storage units" that never get them out. My question to them is why they do that and explained why I don't, nothing to a wedgie over lol!

I understand that all items cant be "displayed" per say but to have a storage unit is asinine. That's like putting a motorcycle in storage in the summer, why have it. I didn't say there was any rules to collecting or whatever you are assuming I am simply asking a question. If you don't appreciate an item enough to have it in your house why have it is my question, not saying that you cant or anything the lynch mob is assuming.

I have always collected just so I could keep everything from everyone else. I am a filthy, greedy, hoarder with my own self storage business. I don't make any money at it, because all the storage units are full of my stuff. I have trailers full of mediocre to poor game used stuff of every player you can imagine.

And you can't have any of it. My estate planner will deal with the mess when I die. I just know I don't want anyone to have it. Those are my collecting rules.
