Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
I like the answers coming in, makes me understand I little better and nice to see a few that only buy what they can display. I don't find your reasoning disrespectful but nowhere did you also say that you were going to let the bats sit in a storage unit for 30 years to collect dust and never get them out, which happens in the hobby and more towards what I was talking about.
When I moved to Colorado I was getting lectured from my girlfriend and mom for throwing away my graduation gown, my high school items yearbooks, sports awards, ect, my dress green and blues for military purposes, to me I don't need those items. If I won an world series ring that's different, that's a tremendous accomplishment that I can wear and takes up minimal space but everything else will sit in a box until I die then be someone else's problem, why do that is what I think. I guess when I was younger I was a mild hoarder of items and now I understand so I'm trying to get rid of all of them. Im done with the military in Jan and then I will get rid of all my excess sleeping bags, knives, gerbers, flashlights, uniforms, ect.

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
I have a lot of my bats & other baseball things in storage. The reason? There are a few. Space is a big one. Not having enough space to display 100-200 bats is pretty common in this hobby I bet. Also, maybe I don't want to have them all in my home. Sometimes I'll bring 10 bats to storage and take 10 more home, kinda swapping them out to have different ones around me.
There is NO disrespect involved here. I agree that we have the right to do whatever we want with our own collections. Also, sometimes I load up on some bats that I can use in a trade later, but don't want them in my house per say. There's many reason to keep a storage unit. Sorry you take it as a disrespectful act, but it simply isn't.Leave a comment:

Plus it's kinda fun rummaging thru my piles of game used laundry and finding a couple really cool jerseys u forgot u had. It really is like Christmas. And when do we adults get to experience that anymore....getting a present that you really really wanted and will enjoy?

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
I only buy what I can display. Matter of fact I was told that I was running out of room to display large items. So now I am down to small items (baseballs, mini helmets, or hockey pucks). If I am good to spend good money I want to be able to see what I bought and have them be talking points for guests when they come over.Leave a comment:

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
Again, if you have a small place, a wife, some kids, even a pet, or not financially stable, then sometimes it makes it really hard to display your items the way you would like. I don't think those reasons make you disrespectful to the hobby or other collectors at all.. It's part of life, and if someone doesn't like that then, well, I'm sorry.
I think we would all agree that those of us that store a lot of our collections wish we could display them.Leave a comment:

Its called courtesy, caring, and generosity, 3 things that seems to be going down the drain in the USA. Those 3 reasons are why I care about other collectors and collection, the reason why there was a memory post for Mulligans its called friendships and bonding. Why have GUU if no one cares about others collections?Leave a comment:

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
This is the part that I take the most umbrage with. I am not collecting with the hope that someday I will be able to retire early and live like a king. I collect because I love baseball. It's as simple as that. The sport is in my blood and has been since a very young age. Outside of my family and friends nothing brings me more enjoyment than collecting game used baseball memorabilia.
I have nearly all of my game used collection in some form of storage (closet, bins etc). Why? Well I don't have the space to display it at the moment. If the question why do I still buy stuff if I don't have the room comes to mind please read my first paragraph again. This is a hobby and while some make a career out of it the majority of us here are just your average guy who has a passion for sports memorabilia.
Finally someone that answers the question respectfully, thanks Wrigley 2010 and I totally understand your situation.Leave a comment:

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
As was stated my items are just that..... my items. This is not socialist collecting last time I checked. I have and will never feel I owe another collector one of my items in storage because he might be head over heels for that player and i cannot display it at this time.
I am not really sure why you care about other peoples collections and what they do with their items that they own.

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
I actually have a Cubs collector that's wanted a jersey that I have a for a few months and I have two of the player, no player collection I just wanted one but another came with a bulk buy so I have two and like the player but feel bad for not selling the jersey because I know he would enjoy the jersey as much as I would and I don't need 2.Leave a comment:

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
Let's say you 3 in the lynch mob are strictly niners collectors and I had a couple Montana SB jerseys that sit in a storage unit and collect dust and all 3 of you have offered me fair offers and I say no Ill leave them in the storage unit you don't find that disrespectful. I understand that its "America dude" but still to me I would feel like I was disrespecting you guys because you would actually enjoy , cherish, and display the item and to me its a piece of fabric because I could care less about the 49ers. Guess opinions differ, but I would feel that I was being disrespectful.Leave a comment:

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
Lol let the lashings begin HAHA!! To me its disrespectful someone that dedicates their entire collection to one player and if you don't appreciate that item enough to display it then why have it period?? I spent a year in Iraq and that's the only time my items were stored and I put them at my moms house in a spare room while I was gone. I understand that all items cant be "displayed" per say but to have a storage unit is asinine. That's like putting a motorcycle in storage in the summer, why have it. I didn't say there was any rules to collecting or whatever you are assuming I am simply asking a question. If you don't appreciate an item enough to have it in your house why have it is my question, not saying that you cant or anything the lynch mob is assuming.Leave a comment:

Re: Why Do Collectors Store Items??????
If I own something and want to put it in storage it's not disrespectful to anyone by doing so. It's my stuff. I can do whatever I want with it. I'm sorry but I find your post kind of silly.
There are no rules in this hobby on what I am supposed to do with my stuff so not sure what you want the outcome of your post to be.
Plus it's America dude.Leave a comment:
