Currently I have 105 University of Hawaii alumni jerseys in my collection along with cleats, gloves, helmets, and footballs. I am almost finished working on my display room which extends into the hallway. With the current setup, I have 20 jerseys on display which means 85 in storage. Does that mean I will stop collecting? Of course the answer is no. I have multiple jerseys belonging to single players but they are different styles or teams. I also may use my excess inventory to trade with other collectors. I can also rotate the jerseys on display for a different look.

When I first read your post I started laughing when you mentioned Kurt Suzuki. As an example I could mention 2 of my friend who have large collections. (Not game used)

One has a huge collection of Hot Wheels & diecast cars. He had a room which displayed a greater majority of his collection. Four years ago he & his wife had a daughter so he had to pack everything away to make room for her.

A second friend had a huge collection of sports cards & regular sports memorabilia. He recently found a girlfriend so he had to pack his stuff away to make room for her. She wasn't thrilled about sleeping in his apartment with barely enough room to walk around.

So there are just 2 reasons that I know personally of why things need to be stored. Both of my friend now have a small place in their house/apartment where they display their collection which the rotate from time to time.

As for me I am very fortunate to have an understanding wife who let me remodel a storage room for my "Kurt Suzuki" collection. Unfortunately as my Suzuki collection grows I find myself having to store away other parts of my collection. I have a room just for my Joe Montana collection. That will be be stored away so that I can have just my Suzuki collection in it.

Here's what my room currently looks like with my Suzuki collection mixed in with my other memorabilia. I hope to have it moved into a room of it's own by the holidays.

Another example of friendliness in the US, they feel they must insult others.

I find it very interesting that someone who is seemingly obsessed with the concept of "respect" should begin a thread by referring to those whose actions and motives he - admittedly - doesn't understand as "selfish", "ignorant" and "hoarders".

Bean, you came into this conversation swinging - insulting and disrespecting others in the most childish and ridiculous way - and you seem surprised that anyone would take offense at that and respond in anything but the most "respectful" way.

You, my friend, have issues.

I'm still trying to understand how in Bean's mind it is 'disrespectful' to 'big collector's' if stuff is in storage as well why if you need to store items they should be 'optioned' to sell to others.

The other side of this coin is that I do purge my collection from time to time, but I am not looking to give my stuff away and when I reach out to those who 'claim' to be looking to buy, they usually end up either being tire kickers or wanting you to basically give them your stuff and for you to pay to ship it to them.

I know Bean either just moved or is about to move to Colorado (Denver area) as he wrote me sometime back asking about neighborhoods and all, but I haven't heard from him since, so I don't know if he is here yet or not.

Hi,

I have spoke to a few collectors recently and a lot over the last year or so where their collection is in storage. Can folks enlighten me on why this happens? To me its selfish and disrespectful to other collectors. For instance, if I had a tubs full Kurt Suzuki items or Austin Jackson items that's disrespectful to both the big player collectors that we have on the GUU that will actually display and cherish them instead of collect dust and mouse feces in a storage unit. There is a very small window in rarity for collecting these days so to put items in storage to think they will pull Babe Ruth prices in 75 years is flat out ignorant.

I understand that sometimes you are not able to display everything but atleast if you need to put items in storage in your basement or attic those should atleast get the option to be sold to someone that will appreciate them. I talked to a collector the other day about an item his words "I'm not interested in selling, plus its in a storage unit and will take a few days for me to get." They have shows called hoarders for a reason, if you are having hoarder issues please let me know I can help take care of that. The thing is as well when most collectors pass away like one of my buddies grandpas, the stuff still sits in a storage unit, forgotten about, and most likely ruined. So for the collectors that have storage units full of items that other collectors will display and cherish can you please explain to me why you are not selling and why you put your items in storage. Collectors like that remind me of the friend who when a couple friends buy a motorcycle so does he and lets it sit in the garage. Opinions will be greatly appreciated so I can understand.

Storage units are great. The unit I use for all my comic books are in a climate controlled unit. There nothing more geeky than having comics laying around the house and this solution also keeps everyone in the family happy.

I have also a 1977 FSX that I have in storage too that I one day want to restore when I retire. Storage for me is a place to keep stuff I may use in the future when my lifestyle permits. It's just on the back burner and I am willing to pay for it because I know how hard it was to amass the collection and don't want to part with it. I appreciate all that is inside the storage unit. That is why I keep them there. That why it take me less than 5 minutes to locate my Detective Comics #27 in the storage unit.

Again its a matter of lifestyle and I don't preach my lifestyle onto anyone because everyone has their own life and its none of my business. I think that is where respect comes into play. When you legally buy anything you are worthy of possessing it. No one should coerce me or guilt me into a decision to move something until I am ready.

I don't know how old Bean is - I'm guessing early to mid-twenties - but I hope that he doesn't, in his zeal to divest himself of physical property, toss things that he (or his family) will someday wish he hadn't. I think about some of the things that my own father and grandfather didn't toss when they were younger that are now treasured family heirlooms - like my grandfather's leather motorcycle helmet, goggles and race medals from the 1920s, and my dad's high school letter jacket. My own brown leather aircrew jacket from the Navy and some other miltary items are packed away, in case my kids should want them someday. Obviously, you can't save everything, and it's less than healthy to try, but a few items don't take up a lot of space, and your own kids and their descendants might be very happy to have them.

I collect Silver Age Marvel key books... don't even get me started on what I've sold in the past....

That said, one of the Attorney's at my wife's office owns (and I've gotten to hold and read it - cover to cover) a copy of Action #1...

My grail for the Comic Collection is Captain America #1 and #3 (Stan Lee's 1st Comic Book foray - he wrote a story for #3).

Sorry for the train derailment... we'll put her back on the tracks now...

Just another brief wobble.

A while back, I took my copies of Avengers #1 and X-Men #1 into my local comic shop, to show them to a friend who owns the place, and one of his employees asked me how much I'd paid for them. I told him, "Twelve cents". Got them off one of those squeaky, circular racks at the grocery store, back in Plainfield, Indiana in the spring of 1963, when I was nine years old. When I was 15 or 16, I decided that I was too old for comics and sold most of my collection for next-to-nothing, but I kept a few, including those, of course. (Wish I'd kept the first hundred issues of Amazing Spiderman - I could probably make a couple of mortgage payments with them.)

I think most of the true collectors collect what they like first and a distant second for investment. Who among us think that a piece in their collection would fetch Babe Ruth prices down the road? As for my collection, I think I would be lucky to break even. I do enjoy sitting in my collection room and looking at my stuff to unwind.

I have almost every jersey a team has sold of a particular player because he is my favorite player. Even though he isn't a big time name, he has a decent size following and I know there are those that would love the items I have scored. Does that make me a bad person?

I'll make one last post because it's getting off topic and some are not really seeing the question at hand.


First I would like to address the folks that have made a post to help me understand a little better but like I stated before this wasn't a question for the collectors that rotate items,ect. This is for the folks that have items in storage that they haven't seen in 7 years. I do like Joel's post about comic books I never thought of it that way.

Second I would like to say that is one of the most amazing player collections I have ever seen,congrats. This can kind of address Smitty as well but I said if someone made a fair offer on an item. So I am implying that if I had a Kurt Suzuki bat in storage for the last 5 years that I haven't opened and Hawaii had made me a fair offer but I said nah Ill let it sit in storage, to me I am being selfish and disrespectful. Yeah anyone can do with what they want its America I understand that.

Lengthwise- you are what I am talking about if I had a jersey of the guy you collected that has been in storage for 9 years and haven't touched that I feel disrespectful to you.
Next I would like to address Jeff if you read my first post I said "to me" as in "I would" feel selfish and disrespectful, so not insulting anyone unless you feel me personally insulting myself is in a way of insulting you. Second the ignorant was not in an insulting manner, it was stated in more of a common sense manner which I know the population with common sense is on the lower half side so I understand. You have sent me emails admitting you're a hoarder so I don't see the insult. Last, don't personally attack me coming from a guy that has sent me emails saying I don't know where half my items are or know half the items I have. You my friend have issues and a little time management and organization 101 would be helpful.

Last I would like to say that like the collector in the C2C this will probably be my last post, while there is some amazing great folks on here (Chris,Dave,most all the Cubs guys) just to many to name that I will still email on occasion, there is to many what seems to be disgruntled folks that roll out of bed pissed off at the world which makes me laugh that troll this site and you can read other posts that just attack folks because they have nothing better to do. Just like a new but older collect of here emailed me and said he got his head chewed off by a long time collector for offending him on an offer, lol. If you get offended by that, there are hurt feelings reports you can fill out. I sold a pair of Jordans for $600 and right before got an offer of 40$ and I was laughing hysterically but some people really get butt hurt about that. There is a site called CHIVE for those that have to much anger in your life or that have patience issues(check it out), I only have patience issues with bad drivers and those that take 15 shots to make a par 4 in golf haha. I might still check the occasional C2C and if anyone has any jerseys on my signature let me know I might pop in once every few months on an items wanted list but for all I have done deals with which is probably over 20 of you I thank you for your time and hospitality.
