Re: Players using others players bats or other equipment

I recently found this photo of Carlos Guillen using a Magglio Ordonez (#30) Rawlings bat. The photo is from June 14, 2006.

I have read that both Guillen and Ordonez like using many different bats and often their teammates bats.

While doing some photography yesterday at Turner Field, I got some shots of Garret Anderson using Chipper Jones' bat. It looks like he put his own tape job on it, and also I got a shot of Anderson during his at-bat and you can clearly see "18" on the knob, so I assume Chipper gave him the bat, and Anderson wasn't just borrowing it.

This past weeken I have Juan Miranda tee off on Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs pitching using a blond Melky Cabrera Marucci bat. He took a few warm up sings in the on-deck circle with a 2-tone LVS but didn't use it

How often do you see a position player use a pitchers bat? I took this picture of Omar Infante a few weeks ago while they were playing the Marlins at Turner Field. You have to look hard, but you can see that it's a Jair Jurrjens model bat.

                Kyle -

I know that Clint Barmes has used Pitcher's bats... in fact, when I saw him at Spring Training, we were talking about the fact I noticed he was using one of Kip Wells old bats that was left behind after he left the Rox.

While doing the 'Making the Game' stint for Rawlings, I made Clint a custom Maple Bat (he can't use it in games because I'm not 'certified' - but he has used it in BP) and he told me then he likes a 33' Bat made as light as possible.

                All the best -

                Chris

Here are some pics of the bats I made... I made TWO Identical (Hand Turned Maple) and numbered their handles 1of2 and 2of2 - Clint took #1 and signed #2 for me:

Kyle - Enrique Wilson when he was with the Yankees would use everybody and anybody else's bats.

He even used one time a Mariano Rivera bat - which I own.

Also one of the rarest Mariano Rivera bats you will ever find that has actual game use on it. Although it wasn't by Rivera himself.

I don't have much to contribute but I suppose I can share my experience at a Mobile BayBears batboy during their first season. Figuring out who was using what bat was actually pretty tricky. Some of them did put their number on in sharpie but even then that could be misleading. The only way I could keep up with who was using what bat was just to mentally note who just batted and place the bat in their slot on the rack. The players did occasionally get custom made bats from friends of relatives (I remember Giambi's bat floating around for example) but as far as I can recall none of the minor leaguers had custom made bats. I think custom made bats were a bit sought after though and I recall overhearing some conversations about getting them. One bat I had (but didn't keep...) was a broke Mike Cameron bat. It was given to me by a Birmingham Barons player (can't recall who) and he told me at the time to hang on to it because Cameron was going to be good (fairly accurate statement). I wonder how many items like that have made it into the market as authentic? I mean these were not even MLB used bats but how is one to know?

On another note, I recall my boss having us sell broke bats in front of the stadium for 5 bucks. They sold fairly well but I remember the confusion when it came to pitchers in particulary. Do you have a Matt Clement? Uhhh I think this one was his. More items going into collections with possibly faulty info...

On Father's Day 2009, Ryan Zimmerman used for 1 at-bat Josh Willingham's Louisville Slugger.

just a quick note, i was watching the indians white sox game last night and they were talking about jim thome. they brought up that jim thome's first career home run was off of former cleveland indian steve farr at yankee stadium bck in 1991. rick manning said a little known fact was that jim was using a joel skinner bat when he hit it.
