Re: Your Favorite all-time baseball player..
My favorite all-time player is Matt Williams.
On the field, he always gave 100%, respected the game, and had his teammates' backs all the way. His seriousness about the game is legendary; his nickname is "The Marine".
I've had several opportunities to speak with Matty - about his bats, in particular, of which I've collected 29, so far - and watch his interactions with other fans, and he is as friendly, caring and personable as any player I've ever seen.Leave a comment:

Re: Your Favorite all-time baseball player..
Ted Williams.
Mostly for the man he was, giving 5 of the best years of his career to serving in the military, flying dangerous missions and being shot down in flames. He was a true hero (not just a "hero" who hits a game-winning homer in a big game.)
His reputation was that he could be difficult, yet he had very close, almost lifelong friendships with several teammates (Pesky, Dom Dimaggio, Doerr to name a few.) He is in the fishermans' hall of fame, hunted big game in Africa, and generally lived what, to me, is the almost ideal life, excelling at everything he did (except marriages.)
I've read a few books about him and no question, if I could spend a day with any ballplayer, it would be Ted, absolutely no question.
Rube Waddell would be second.....Leave a comment:

Re: Your Favorite all-time baseball player..
1) Graig Nettles (Any kid growing up a Yankee fan in the mid 1970s has to have him on their list.)
2) Reggie Jackson (I met him at Lou Piniella's baseball camp in 1979. I loved Reggie!)
3) Thurman Munson (Great Yankee-tragic, tragic loss...)
4) Goose Gossage (I met him at the doctor's office when I was in the 2nd grade. He was getting a check-up for one of his kids. I still have small sheet of paper he signed for me that day. I was completely awe-struck- like the Brady kids were when they met Joe Namath!)
5) Ron LeFlore (His book was one of the first ones I ever read. A very interesting story of how Billy Martin got him an early release from prison, so he could joing the Tigers. He later became an all star and one of the best base stealers of his time.)Leave a comment:
